I'm not a sissy that counts county routes, but the lowest number I have not been on has increased to 330 as of today. Drove both VA 288 and VA 323, which were my lowest undriven numbers.

Is VA 323 fully reopen now?  I was going to clinch it in July, but it was closed at the northern end so I skipped it.

Fully reopen, but there was a slight realignment at the north end.

Add me to the list of anti-county route participants. I went 40 minutes out of my way to drive on OH 182, only to find it has demoted to a county route. One of the few times my DeLorme has led me astray.

Either I Get Oscar or the county routes go out the window. Can't have it both ways.

Of course, then it becomes Get None.

I’m not counting all county routes, just the ones on the Wikipedia page “Routes numbered ‘x’”

Mind you, Oscar has admitted to taking steroids, errr, using county routes, to pad his total as well.
Maybe we should volunteer one of the autistic kids to go spend a week counting all the routes Oscar has tallied over on 'Travel Mapping.'

Well I wonder how oscar is only at 609 then.  Any number between 600 and 650 (maybe even up to 700) exists in practically every VA county (minus Henrico and Arlington of course).

Hope Oscar doesn't mind my running TM's "RoutesByNumber" program on his data.  Using oscar.list in TM (which would be minus any concurrencies that might be auto-detected during the site update), the following is reported:

Code: [Select]
Numbers up to 999 for which no entries are found:
386 399 437 455 461 492 498 539 548 551 554 600 606 609 616 617 620 621 622 626 628 629 631 633 634 643 644 645 649 651 654 657 660 661 668 677 679 683 685 689 692 698 709 718 719 720 721 722 724 726 727 728 731 733 734 737 738 741 744 745 746 747 748 749 751 752 754 757 761 762 767 768 769 771 777 779 782 783 784 788 791 792 793 796 797 798 799 801 803 813 819 828 830 831 839 843 846 853 854 855 859 861 862 863 864 866 868 871 873 875 876 883 885 888 889 892 893 898 899 900 902 904 908 913 917 918 919 920 923 926 927 928 929 935 937 938 939 941 942 943 945 947 949 950 952 957 958 961 962 963 964 965 966 967 971 974 975 977 978 979 981 982 983 984 987 988 991 993 995 996 999

Of course, I'm not questioning Oscar's honesty on this.  Someone asked if we could see how many of his numbers show up in TM clinches.  Fortunately, it took just a minutes or two, not a week.

I think it's more likely that Oscar has actually driven every square inch of pavement on the North American continent and is just playing along so the rest of us don't feel bad.

I'm not counting county routes. I am counting decommissioned highways IF I drove on them before being decommissioned.

He has a comment in the file that he had clinched VA 386 and VA 399 while they existed.

That confirms that my count doesn't include any county routes under 400, and only a few 4xx and 5xx county routes, since Travel Mapping ignores non-freeway county routes. Maryland, Ohio, Florida, Louisiana, Newfoundland/Labrador, Ontario freeways, and the Interstate/U.S. routes account for most of the 4xx/5xx routes I've traveled.

My list file doesn't yet have any entries for Mississippi state routes, or Texas farm-to-market routes (not yet mapped in TM). I've traveled at least MS 492 and MS 498. Also, I don't track my spotty travels on Virginia secondary routes, which TM will never map. Mapmikey has more extensively traveled the Virginia secondary system (Virginia is his home state, I only live there), and as he's noted above he can quickly zoom ahead of me once he gets to 599.

UPDATE: Running the program Jim is developing, which picks up concurrences I missed in my manual searches of my TM list file, indicates that in the 400s and 500s, there are only four route numbers not accounted by TM-mapped routes I've been on, per my TM list file (oscar). Those would be ones where I drove only on Alabama or New Jersey county routes (437, 539, 554), or Mississippi state routes (498).

Would it be possible to make this program publicly accessible somehow, e.g. by having a link to it on our TM user pages?

Re: Lowest-numbered route you haven't been on

Would it be possible to make this program publicly accessible somehow, e.g. by having a link to it on our TM user pages?

I'd like to get the same functionality into the TM web front end, but haven't had a chance.  For now I'm happy to run for anyone on request, and anyone who wants to grab the Java code and run it can do so.

Just feed it the TM .list file you'd like it to process as standard input.

Oh, cool. Thanks!

Of course, the real power in using TM for this is being able to leverage its concurrency data, so it'd be nice if the web front-end that eventually exists for the purposes of this could do that. I don't know if that would have an unacceptably high server overhead for what kind of amounts to a toy for a subset of the userbase, though.

TM is chock full of toys for subsets of the userbase!

Yes, if pulling out of the database, you'd get the benefit of detected concurrency info.  I think the server load for such functionality is negligible, the only limiting factor is getting it implemented.

OK, so I couldn't help myself and needed to get this implemented.  It's just on TM's development server for now:

https://tmdevel.teresco.org/user/routesbynumber.php?units=miles&u=terescoj

Send along any suggestions and report any bugs, and once it is in good shape, I'll get it on the main site and link it from the user page.

Also, I can now update my number for this thread to 184.  Turns out I've been on 2 of what I thought was my lowest missing number, as I-78 leading to the Holland Tunnel is also NJ 139, and US 36 has a concurrency with MO 139.

Three years after-the-fact (and using Jim's development code on TM) I'll finally bite on this thread.  Using TM, my lowest untraveled number is 323.  But I've traveled the former MN 323, so my lowest number now would be 379.

Taking a slightly different spin, the lowest route number where I have only traveled one such route is 248.  I've only been on PA 248...no other routes with that number.

My lowest such route is 379 (only VA 379).

The lowest number where I have been on fewer than 10 routes is 106 (NS106, NB106, CT106, GA106, IL106, NH106, SD106, VA106). Fewer than 5 routes, 192 (US192, MD192, TXSpr192, CA192)

The list generated by Jim's code indicates I've traveled a lot of route 0s, but mine are all unnumbered routes in TM's database. Jim, is there a way to narrow the "route 0" list to routes that are actually numbered 0?  There seem to be some motorways in Europe numbered 0, none of which I've been on.
