Road trip: KCMO to York, PA
« on: April 09, 2019, 09:37:10 PM »

Long time no post. Long story short, I'm moving in with my fiancee's family (I got engaged a while back), so I'll be heading from Kansas City out to York in a couple days.

I'm planning to take I-70 most of the way, but I'm worried I won't have toll money for the PA Turnpike from the I-70 merge over to I-83. So what'd be the best way to shunpike it?

Congrats! And good luck with the move!

One way to shunpike the PA Turnpike would be to continue past the PA Turnpike onto PA 66B to US 119 in order to get to US 30. From there, just head east on US 30 and you’re there!

You could get off of I-70 at Exit 15 (Washington, PA—US 40 to US 19) and continue through the US 19-US 40 concurrency and make your way through the SWPA countryside while tracing the old National Highway/National Pike/National Road into the NWMD countryside before reaching I-68 at Keyser’s Ridge. Here you have the option of continuing on US 40 Alternate to I-68 in Cumberland. In Union-town, PA you can either bypass the municipality via US 119 or you can take US 40 Business through the downtown area.

You could also exit I-70 at Exit 164 to the east of Zane’s Ville, OH for US 22-US 40 and continue east on US 22 upon entering Cambridge, OH to I-376 to the west of Pittsburgh, where you should continue east on I-376 before exiting the interstate onto US 30 at Exit 78 to the east of Pittsburgh, then head east on US 30 all the way to York.

Instead of taking I-70, try I-64 east out of St. Louis to I-79, then I-68 to I-70, then either I-81 north to US 30, or continue to Baltimore and around I-695 to I-83.

I was thinking about suggesting I-64 as well. Though, one could also use I-70, I-270, I-70, I-70, I-670, I-71, I-76, I-80, I-99, PA 26, Harrison Road, PA 144, US 322, Front Street, I-83, US 30, Loucks Mill Road, and I-83 Business.

Taking Exit 35 on I-70 to MD 66 to MD 64 to MD 77 to US 15 to PA 234 to PA 462 to I-83 Business is another alternative.

My original suggestion was/would be I-70 to I-270 to I-70 to I-70 to I-470 to I-70 to I-79 to I-68 to I-70 to I-695 to I-83 to I-83 Business.

I can't speak to the condition of PA 31 except between Somerset and Bedford, but you could possibly use it from I-70 Exit 51 east to just outside Bedford, then US 30 onward. PA 31 and US 30 parallel the turnpike roughly from Mount Pleasant to Breezewood.

Last fall, the interchange between PA 31 & I-70 was being totally redone. The ramp from I-70 EB to PA 31 EB was torn down. The detour, go to the next interchange and then double back on I-70, was in bad shape as well.
I'd be surprised if this interchange has been completed over the last 6-8 months since.

Or if you want some history at the end,  take US 15 north out of Frederick up to Gettysburg and catch US 30 East to York.
