I recently drove the entirety of CA 23 from CA 1 in Malibu north to CA 126 in Fillmore.  Suffice to say the route of CA 23 is quite versatile as it offers two large mountain grades, several urban arterial roads and two freeway segments.  In particular I found the segment of CA 23 between CA 1 and US 101 over the Santa Monica Mountains to be quite enjoyable as it was largely a narrow grade that incorporates part of Mulholland Highway.  Grimes Canyon Road is probably the most well known section of CA 23 and was once planed to be replaced by what was known as the Decker Freeway:
