I don't like the advanced stats on the bottom, who cares about those, the broadcasters didn't make it better either.

In fantasy football, I hate snake drafts. I'm in 3 leagues, and two of them use a snake draft and 1 uses a straight draft. In 1 that is a snake draft, I have the 1st pick. So I get 1 pick, then since it is a 12 team league, get to wait 22 more picks before I get to pick again. Hardly seems fair. At least in a straight draft I'm only waiting 11 picks to pick again.

And on an unrelated note, I hate when the rug gets pulled out from under you when negotiating a potential trade. I had a trade offered to me, and needed some time to consider it. I was ready to accept it, but in the meantime the other manager proposed a trade for the same player to another manager and it was accepted before I could tell him my decision.  Guess I gotta be quicker in my decisions.

Don't worry, the Indiana Bears usually aren't good enough to warrant being flexed.

And 2018 was the last winning record they had before that.  Wait for some consistency to get going before you make the mistake of joining "Bears are back" bandwagon.

Bourbonnais is in the Chicago DMA (television market).  You get every Bears game there on broadcast TV, it might just be on Sunday afternoon rather than some other time slot.  Unless you leave the Bears' television territory for the holidays it shouldn't make it any more difficult to follow the team.

Also, the late night posting patterns of I-57 doesn't seem to suggest that staying up is an issue.

You're in every team's DMA and get every game from every team on broadcast TV if you have IPTV.

I'm talking about if the Bears play early or late afternoon Saturday or Sunday, especially if Monday or Thursday is involved.

Do you know how crazy it drives me? Especially almost after seeing my brother almost get jumped by a wasted fan on the way home from a game. Besides, the beer is cheaper at a bar anyway.

I can't help but feel as though there is a substantial part of that story that is missing.  People don't often get jumped or get into fights at sporting venues "just because."

The guy was getting off the train with how drunk he was, he thought my brother said something to him (he didn't say anything BTW), and he came back to the train to jump him, but his not-as-drunk friend stopped him from doing it, the trains doors closed, about 3 1/2 seconds later they reopened same thing happened again before the train closed the doors and pulled away.

Yeah, I'd say that is "minor" because there weren't even actual fisticuffs.

When people (including me) make a big deal about the Super Bowl, it's just a simple football game.

For all the technical improvements in televising live sports, they still haven't quite figured out how to handle a bright sunny day when part of the field is in the shadow of the grandstands.

It's very noticeable in the telecast of the Apple Cup, which is being played in bright sunshine in Seattle.  The grandstand shadow covers a significant part of the near side of the field from the TV viewer's point of view, and plays that go near the sideline over there are very difficult to follow live.  Only when they do a replay can I discern what really happened on the play.

TheHighwayMan3561

The dudes on defense in football who arbitrarily stick their fists in the air to signal 4th down. What exactly is the point of that? Is the sideline not paying attention?

In order for me to be aware that somebody else is publicly intoxicated, they must be engaging in some sort of behavior that is noticeable—because otherwise I wouldn't know they were drunk.  Sometimes that behavior is entertaining, sometimes it's sad, sometimes it's obnoxious, sometimes it's belligerent and violent.

Same with us.  It's the only sports game of the year that we'll actually watch on TV, unless we're at somebody else's house and they just happen to have a game on while we're there.

And the Olympics.  We like the Olympics.

Quote from: Scott5114 on September 10, 2026, 08:05:22 PMIt would have been interesting to see him get off the train and leave how drunk he was on board.

One of my scariest moments was with a drunk guy getting off a train.

I think I may have told this story before, but here goes...

I was renting a room out of a house at the time from a guy who, after having spent eighteen years in prison, kind of treated his own house like a prison—staying in his room and watching TV, only venturing out for groceries or some sketchy way of making a little cash, mistrust and paranoia about the police—a house that I think was paid for by his rich father, but from which he rented rooms under the table for cash in order to just barely scrape by.

Anyway, this was in the Chicago suburbs.  When he found out that I knew my way around on public transportation, he asked if I'd take him downtown Chicago, and so I did.  He told me when we got there that his plan was to go to a hotel bar, pretend that I was his son, and hit on women.  Knowing what I know now about his past, no surprise.  So we went to a hotel bar just off the northeast side of the Loop, he played his game and I grudgingly played my part, he got drunk and started making a scene, the bartender called the police, and I assured the officers who responded that I could get him home safely.  I walked him the block or two to the L and we started heading back on the Green Line toward Harlem/Lake.  It was a crowded train, standing room only, and he was drunk enough to be stumbling around and bumping into people whenever the train rocked.  I tried to ignore him.  Unbeknownst to me, he then started flashing cash around and asking if anybody would like to sell him some drugs, and somebody took him up on it.

At the Laramie/Lake station, I looked up and saw my drunken landlord standing on the platform with a 12,000-pound dude from the 'hood.  I stepped off the train and told him this was not the neighborhood to be in after dark, and that he should get back on the train with me.  The dude from the 'hood then looked at me and said, "You're with me now."  As in, —As long as you're with me, ain't nobody gonna mess with you.—  And then the three of us headed down the stairs to the street corner.  So there I was, in the ghetto, at night, with a drunk guy trying to buy drugs from someone who could snap my neck just by looking at it.

Fortunately, nothing happened.  The dude said he just had to run up to his friend's apartment and would be right back with the drugs, he believed him and gave him $100, then the dude flagged down a passing car and got in, and the two of us were left standing on the corner.  After the realization of his stupidity broke through his drunken fog, we walked back up to the platform and caught the next train, then transferred to Metra the rest of the way home.

Cameras don't really perceive the combination of shadows, brightness, color, and depth the same way the human eyes can.

When dealing with a high-contrast situation, you're either exposing for highlights (sky, light, lightest-intensity situation) or the shadows (places with less reflected light). If you're really good at post-production, you can take multiple photos, overlay them via layers and fine-tune to your heart's content. Or take 3-5 different photos with different exposure levels or contrast levels, and then choose the best one(s)...this is what I do.

With a photograph, you can timely adjust depending on the situation, but if you meter the light from the sky level, you'll get a lovely color above the horizon but limited detail below. Or, you expose the darkened shadows and blow out the sky, and it appears almost white.

With a recording, it's constantly adjusting exposure which can be unsettling over time, so there's usually a pause between exposure adjustments, so they settle on one with limited change in over/underexposure. So there's a lot more pre-production that goes on. You could probably dial down the contrast and saturation levels and then you get more detail in the shadows but it won't look as impressive on TV.

Overcast days makes this easier; there's a pretty good average between the range of color, depth, and high/low values. But color is more muted and the imagery is less "intense/dramatic". While indoor sports have a mere fraction of the available light, there's generally a lot more exposure consistency, but with the same sorts of color/detail tradeoff, and the annoyance of lighting having a different wavelengths which don't always play nice with recorded action.
