All this county talk got me thinking about new courthouses – not the ones on a traditional county seat square.

Two in Texas that leap to mind are ones in New Boston in Bowie County and in McKinney in Collin County. The one in New Boston is right on I-30 and is a pretty impressive building that was built in the late 1990s. The one in McKinney is off the highway a little bit, but is even more impressive and part of a complex that includes the county jail and other administrative buildings.

Have any other county governments recently built impressive new headquarters in non-traditional locations?

Kendall County, Illinois, moved theirs out of downtown Yorkville a decade or so ago to a new campus along US-34 between Yorkville and Plano (but still within Yorkville). https://goo.gl/maps/KHVS1WuChF5w5ZhC6

DuPage County, Illinois, moved theirs out of downtown Wheaton back in the 60s/70s to a campus on the west side of Wheaton along County Farm Road. https://goo.gl/maps/fcNGnf4rcqpwk5Cw8

By contrast, Will County, Illinois, just built a new, much bigger courthouse across the street from the old one (dating to the 60s) in downtown Joliet.  Other administrative buildings are scattered throughout downtown Joliet. https://goo.gl/maps/JiGCXX7dvyTbGhttps://goo.gl/maps/srLkhdAS45RdM1N77PAj8 &

In Virginia, it's common for county courthouses to be shared with enclaved/adjacent independent cities, with government offices separate from the courthouse.

In my county, Arlington, the court system is shared with the much smaller independent city of Falls Church. Arlington's courthouse was replaced with a modern facility in the last few decades (I was called for jury duty in the old one, and for testimony in the new one, both before I retired in 2011). But it only has judicial functions. Arlington's government offices are spread among high-rises a few blocks from the new and old courthouses. Falls Church has a much smaller city hall, a few miles away from the Arlington/Falls Church courthouse.

Nearby Fairfax County has a courthouse, shared with Fairfax independent city, within the city. The county's huge government offices are several miles away, in a modern complex in the Fair Oaks area along I-66. As with Falls Church, Fairfax city has a much smaller city hall, a few blocks from the courthouse, to house its much smaller bureaucracy.

In Waupaca WI, the courthouse moved to the outskirts in 1988 to occupy the 3rd floor of the new county services building.
