Surely Ohio has more rizz than the flat lands of Illinois?

As I've mentioned before, while I think the name Juneteenth is dumb, I like it as a federal holiday—even more so, in fact, than MLK Jr Day.

But.  Do the city buses really need to stop running for Juneteenth?  I understand buses not running on Christmas and Thanksgiving and New Year's Day and Independence Day and whatnot—you know, the big holidays.  But a lot of us still have to go to work on the more minor holidays, so I think the buses should still run on those.  And I consider Juneteenth, in this context, to rank along with Presidents Day and Veterans Day:  days when a lot of us still go to work, business as usual, so there should still be buses to get us there.  (And by the way, apparently Wichita's city buses also don't run on Presidents Day or Veterans Day, and I think they should.)

It didn't even occur to any of us in the family that buses wouldn't run today.  So our son walked down to the bus stop a little less than an hour ago, and waited and waited.  He called Carrie, who looked online to track his bus in real time, and there were no buses to track.  She called me.  Fortunately, I even knew it was Juneteenth (not sure if she even knew it was, because it's business as usual for us today) and immediately put two and two together.  Walk back home from the bus stop, get the bike out of the shed, hunt for the chain lock, book it to work, and walk in the door with only five minutes to spare.  Good thing he doesn't work farther away from home...

Looks like MBTA in Boston is running on a standard schedule and MTA in NYC.  Heck, looks like MBTA will be following their schedule on the 4th.  Centro's running on a usual schedule today, too, in dinky Syracuse.

Sounds like a Wichita problem.

Buses should run every day. We're in the 21st century after all.

The city government in Fresno pretty much shut down today as Juneteenth is a California state holiday.  I'm assuming FAX is operating but I don't recall seeing a Route 29 bus when I was running this morning.

I don't. It's not like people magically stop needing to go places on Christmas and Thanksgiving. Seems pretty dumb to say if you don't have a car you're not allowed to have Christmas anywhere but at your own house. And of course just because it's a holiday doesn't mean some people don't still have to work.

This is just Wichita being cheap. Southern Nevada RTC—which by no means is considered a gold standard in terms of transit, and in fact the rest of the West Coast kind of makes fun of it—runs on all holidays. They simply use Saturday schedules for the more minor holidays and Sunday schedules for the more major ones, thus running the buses less frequently. Juneteenth just gets regular service.

I'd even go out on a limb and say that the people without cars are more likely to need to work on weekends/holidays.

Our RTC also runs every holiday, at a minimum on the Sunday schedule, and said schedule is pretty much the regular schedule minus the Express routes that are basically tailored towards stuff that isn't open on said holidays anyways. It's crazy that places could go without service on any holiday, let alone minor ones like Juneteenth.

I, too, think that buses should run every day, even Sundays and holidays (and also into the evening hours).  But I at least understand them not running on major holidays.  Even if everyone relying on public transit worked "normal" hours, I still think it's wrong to structure the whole system around only work hours:  what about all the things they need to do after work and on the week-ends?

I was actually a little bit more cynical than that earlier today.  Wichita recently relocated its central transit center from downtown to the Delano neighborhood.  As part of that transition, they've been running free of charge (no fare required) from June 6 through June 20.  My cynical mind figured this was their way of getting out of running for free one of those days.

Seattle's Link Light Rail ran a normal schedule... which is good because some genius scheduled a Mariner's game on the same day as a World Cup soccer game.
