45

Darn, was hoping we'd go through a few more before someone guessed that low.

That is correct - I-190 north of Niagara Falls on the approach to the Lewiston Bridge. It does make sense to slow traffic down before the bridge, but this is absurdly early - still 2 miles to the bridge and 1.5 miles to the start of the US Customs area.

Wow, that is abysmally low for an Interstate. I was 100% lowballing. Didn't think I would get it. Though I was trying to be a little scientific, as I don't remember lots of 50 and 60 limits Upstate (last I was there), and that left me with 45 based on prior guesses.

Another thing I recall from my visit Upstate: there's no way anyone is doing 45 on there. Unless it's really heavily patrolled.

Interstates with limits that low always throw me. WSDOT raised all freeway limits in the late 90s and there are none left posted below 60 (minus the last mile of I-5 in Vancouver).

I will post something soon.

You're extremely close for one reason but not the reason you think.

Is it the E20?
It's not, but this kind of road is quite common. Speed limit tends to be 100 km/h though. This is the place, national road 34 just off of the E4.

riiga

My guess will be 60 km/h. Those dashes look too close together to be a high-speed road. And an upside-down 9 is a 6, if that was the reason one wouldn't think of.

Good thinking! But luckily it is higher than 60 km/h.

Well, there's no rule that says I have to pick something from NY, is there?
But yes, you are correct on both points. 60 mph is not used at all in NY, and 50 is (to my knowledge) only used on non-freeways.

Also true that no one really drives 45 mph on that stretch. 10 over the limit is fairly standard for all freeways, and this stretch is no exception; traffic usually moves at 55 mph or better. This section is uniquely painful, as southbound I-190 is 65 mph and the adjacent roadway, NY 265, is 55 mph. Might very well be the only example of three adjacent roadways all having different speed limits, and certainly the only example of the middle one having the lowest limit!

Not coincidentally, a very similar situation to this one! I wish I could say this was the only freeway in NY posted below 55 mph, but I-490 in Rochester is 40 mph, and I believe there are several downstate that are 50 mph, possibly among others.

Let's go 110.

Darn, missed my chance to guess 110! Seems like a very logical choice, given Jakeroot's comment about 120 km/h being correct in 2018.

It was an awful hint in terms of giving away the limit. When I said "extremely close", what I was referring to was the limit in the other direction, just on the other side of the intersection behind the camera car. The limit is 90 km/h north of Willis Rd, 110 km/h to the south. So it was only barely 110.

Why did they lower the speed limit?

I'm not sure exactly what you were referring to, so I'll answer both possibilities:

* The limit was lowered from 120 to 110 in 2018 following a safety review of all highways with a raised speed limit (follow up of Minister Todd Stone's work in 2014 to raise limits across the province). This stretch had a slight increase in crashes, so they lowered it back.

* North of Willis Road, you are starting to get into Campbell River, so the limit drops from 110 to 90 (formerly 120 to 100).
