The great thing about being in a flat state is when litter makes it onto a roadway the slightest breeze carries it right into Wisconsin:

I wonder what the trucking crowd has to say?

Remaining valid nonflat GSV links needed to prove that Illinois isn't flat: 199

Make it 198

This is going to be a tough challenge!  200 is a big number.  So I'll do it in chunks, and see how far I can get.  My goal is to have only one GSV per road–no duplicates.  Here are my first 25 GSV links, plus two bonus ones thrown in at the end.

Oh, boy. I did not expect anyone to actually accept this challenge. But I suppose I'll go through these to weed out the flat ones.

1. is a small hill. The downhill truck sign is deceiving, that wouldn't be there in most states. I'll give half a point.
2. also a small hill. another half point.

When Illinois gets something like this than you can consider it not flat.

https://www.google.com/maps/@38.449666,-79.6547105,3a,75y,78.08h,101.21t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sl1hfmktWxcKtcehyBhCQeA!2e0!7i3328!8i1664

Pretty sure we have that somewhere in the Ozark plateau or even the driftless zone. No flat road or state would have something like this posted on the side of the road:

https://goo.gl/maps/DaF5V4tX9JdiVMwk7

certainly not in Louisiana or Mississippi.
The image that you showed is nowhere close to as hilly as the image I showed. Mine is from Highland County Virginia which has an average elevation of 2,832 feet above sea level. Good luck finding that anywhere in Illinois. One sign doesn't determine if Illinois is flat or not btw. Highland County has one of the highest average elevations east of the Mississippi and you are going to find something like that in the Ozark Plateau or the driftless zone? Yeah right.

The amusing thing for me is having lived on the West Coast half my life the East Coast ranges don't tend to feel all that impressive very often anymore.  The first half of my life when I lived in the Midwest and East Coast they did.
The western US is huge and their mountains are impressive. The eastern US not as much I agree.

For what it's worth, I don't expect to make it to 200, and I think it's an unreasonable target to hit.  But it's still a fun challenge anyway.

I think we can do it, the IL extension of the Ozark plateau has numerous examples alone. Here are some from the northern tier of the state which are outside of the Ozark plateau, some even outside of the driftless area.

My favorite is that he responded with "flat" about a GSV shot on a road with a climbing lane.

So here's who thinks "flat" means put a leveling tool on the ground and have the bubble exactly in the middle to the millimeter:

- Illinois resident
- former Illinois and now Kansas resident
- Oklahoma resident

Can we get some diversity of sources on this?

K, I'll give you 3 free points for skips, bringing your total to 33.5. Though I haven't looked at the most recent ones yet.

No, his total is 1033.5. I gave him a thousand points, remember?

A thousand points to Kyle because thspfc apparently has no idea what the word flat means.
So here's who thinks "flat" means put a leveling tool on the ground and have the bubble exactly in the middle to the millimeter:

- Illinois resident
- former Illinois and now Kansas resident
- Oklahoma resident

Can we get some diversity of sources on this?
Yes, I think it's very telling that those who are defending Carhorn on this are all from the Great Plains.  Where one lives can certainly influence what one considers to be "flat".  For instance, back when I was growing up, I thought this was a hill.  Now, not so much.  This is more of a hill.  Still, "I can find a hill in Illinois" or even "this small piece of Illinois has hills" does not qualify Illinois from being flat (overall).  Ironically, Carhorn's example of somewhere that he considers flat seems to be representative of the majority of the state per the terrain layer and some street view exploration.  Yeah, the southern and northwest corners are hilly... but the vast majority of the state is grade A Flatlandia.

I think ditches are flat, yes. The ones with small hills get half a point. The ones with real hills get a full point.

You called a straight-on shot of a glacial boundary with a 350-foot elevation gain "flat".  Are you saying that counts as a "ditch"?

Problem is, looking at the state with the terrain layer enabled shows that it's not all like that. The area I referenced in that example a few posts back was in Douglas County which is the flattest county in the state. There are no other counties in the state that look like Douglas County on the terrain layer for a significant amount of distance. This is the only area in Illinois that can be found to be truly flat. One can see this on I57 from just South of Champaign to Neoga. The terrain layer on Google maps verifies this. Around Neoga the landscape looks less like Douglas County and more like McHenry County.

Edit: Even Douglas County has some hilly terrain, granted it's on the edge of the county but hilly terrain nonetheless

Everyone can be wrong. Yeah, the majority of Illinois is flat. Yeah, a lot of the stuff Crash posts claiming to be hilly is not really hilly. But thspc's insisting that anything less than a 50% grade is flat is also really silly.

My yardstick for whether something is flat or not is whether I would notice the grade if I were to ride up it on a bicycle. If I would consider stopping and taking a breather before attempting to continue up it, it's not flat.

For the record, I wholeheartedly agree with both of those statements.

Remember, after all, that I'm the one who started the "IL is mostly but not completely flat, but most of its hills are unexceptional" thread.  The title sums up my honest opinion about Illinois's topography.
