I'm just curious if any of you guys have a last.fm?

For those who may not know, last.fm has an Internet radio station is similar to Pandora,  You can also scrobble (display your listened music to your profile) from your computer via iTunes or Windows Media Player.

For the sake of additional discussion warrant, what's your favorite music genre while driving?     I generally listen to alternative indie rock as well as good ol' classic rock.

97,000 played tracks and closing in on 100,000 pretty fast :)

does this work better than Pandora?

my problem with Pandora is, let's say I want to listen to music that sounds generally like Overkill, Kreator and Megadeth - so they'll also throw in some Metallica, whom I just didn't feel like mentioning, not because I've never heard them.  I want to hear music that sounds like those bands that I have never heard before.  They won't even play the semi-obscure bands like Laaz Rockit or Heathen... but hey, I didn't mention Testament explicitly, does that imply I haven't also been listening to Testament since the late 80s?

(and to answer the second question - speed metal all the way, especially while driving!)

Last.fm will do that as well, but if you type in a more obscure radio station, it's less likely to play something 'mainstream'.  I prefer Last.fm over Pandora since they seem to have more selection, and it only plays advertisements when you start a radio station.  :P

Doesn't that make you speed, or is that the point?  :D

I have last.fm on my iPhone but I really like AOL Radio. I play the all-Metallica channel a lot.

Your musical compatibility with ChrisZwolle is Low
Music you have in common includes Journey, Boston, Linkin Park, Muse and The Beatles.

I see you're into classic and electronic rock?  :P  Interesting mix.

@hbelkins:  I haven't tried AOL Radio.  Have you used Pandora as well?

I've downloaded Pandora but don't use it.

I use iHeartRadio to listen to Rush Limbaugh since the broadcast stations who carry him can't be picked up well where I work, and my workplace disables streaming audio on our computers.

I used to use Pandora - but have stopped using it since they started shutting it down every 5 minutes and inserting ads.  I like a player to go long - not have to be clicked and let me do my thing.

I'm guessing you're using the PC or Mac version.

I've got it running on my Motorola Droid and the ads show at the bottom of the screen, but it never stops.

I paid for an upgrade to Pandora in June - 99 cents for more than 40 hours of listening - and despite the fact that I did not pay in July, I have not seen a pause for advertising since June 22 or whenever it was that I paid.  Maybe I've upgraded myself to some higher level of user?

in any case, if they ask me for 99 cents again, I will not hesitate to give it to them.  Well worth it, methinks.

last.fm is free and has unlimited listening.

You only get advertisements when you launch a radio station on your browser.  If you download the app, you'll never hear an advertisement.  You can love and ban tracks as well as start radio stations.  You can play a friend's radio library as well as your own, and you can share your music in a better library management system.   It also displays your music listening history from other programs if you want onto your profile and will attempt to match music into your general library radio station.

Some people claim that Pandora has a better filtering system than last.fm, but they're both about the same to me on that regard.

I just played my 100,000th song on Last.FM (since Nov. 2006, that means ~68 songs per day on average)

The 100,000th song was "Eagles - The Sad Cafe".

I've been experimenting with blip.fm... is that something similar?

I've never heard of blip.fm...  I assume it has a radio that streams to your preferences?
