Quote from: Henry on February 11, 2026, 10:18:27 PMI wonder how long will it be until Coca-Cola slaps its rival with a C&D? Those polar bears were a Christmas staple for many years.

Pfft.  Pepsi has taken previous shots at Coke like this.  Coke's market share is so gigantic, they may do something, but it's like Pepsi's a little bird pecking at an elephant's hide.

Granted this was over thirty years ago, but when I was in Italy, Pepsi was cheaper than Coke - if you could find it.

That was once Pepsi's niche in the US, too. Their 12-ounce bottle contained twice as much soda as Coke's six-ouncer, but they both charged 5¢. Their jingle included the lines, "Twice as much for a nickel, too. Pepsi-Cola is the drink for you."

"That sounded stupid, didn't it?"

Those sports don't work as well in suburban areas as football teams do. When you're depending on attendance at 40-80 home games you ideally need to be near a city's center. Football is only 8-9 home games per year and mostly on Sundays so convenience is less important.

Yeah. The Coyotes tried suburban life and it was a disaster (though only one item on their manifesto of fuck ups). The Pistons ultimately left Auburn Hills to return downtown.

The Coyotes almost constantly threatening to leave the market killed their fan base more than moving to Glendale did.  At least in Glendale the arena was easy to get to since it was immediately off of Loop 101.  Downtown Phoenix isn't really anything all that special and easily most bypassed by most the Valley .

Demographics can be part of it too.  The Atlanta Braves built their new ballpark in the northern suburbs because that's where the wealthiest part of their fan base comes from.

For that reason, if the Coyotes' arena had been off Loop 101 in the Scottsdale area they would likely still be in Arizona.  The Diamondbacks had issues with wanting expensive upgrades to Chase Field; I'm not sure where that stands, but at one point building a new stadium out in the Loop 101/Scottsdale area was floated as an option.

I always thought it was strange going to Coyotes games.  Even when they were in downtown the crowd was never all that large unless there was a visiting team from a hockey city.  When the Red Wings came to town the stands were filled with about 75% Detroit fans.  I guess that it made sense, a lot of people in Phoenix have relocated from the Midwest.  I never felt as the Coyotes connected with the long-term residents in the city like the far more entrenched Suns.  The Cardinals were not looked favorably with the locals either until Kurt Warner dragged them to a Super Bowl.

I'm sure they'll still be the Chicago Bears. I mean, no one calls it the New Jersey Giants and New Jersey Jets.

And playing in the suburbs is nothing new. There's no such thing as the Foxboro Patriots, Landover Commanders, Arlington Cowboys, Santa Clara 49ers, Inglewood Rams, Inglewood Chargers or Glendale Cardinals.
Go Cubs Go! Go Cubs Go! Hey Chicago, what do you say? The Cubs are gonna win today!
