When curating your own music playlists, what genres do you consider compatible versus incompatible?

For smooth jazz, genres that I consider compatible include R&B, pop, and hip-hop. Incompatible genres include country, heavy metal, and punk.

Back in the mixtape days, the more variety the better.  But I never included classical music when making a mixtape, for some reason.  And now that I think about it, I don't think I ever included any instrumental-only music either (such as Endgame by REM, or Flying by the Beatles).

But otherwise, as I said, I love variety.  A mixtape of mine might go from Enya to Chumbawamba to Stan Rogers to Nanci Griffith to Beck.

I've never worried about the capability of music genre, especially when I hit "shuffle."

Obviously I don't care. It can go from heavy metal to Acadian western to 80s pop to SiIvaGunner rips.

There are no incompatibilities anymore. See "Walk This Way" by Run-DMC and Aerosmith, and "Old Town Road" by Billy Ray Cyrus and Lil Nas X.
Government would be tolerable if not for politicians and bureaucrats.

In my experience with music, adult contemporary (soft rock to the older crowd) has combined a wide range of music for other genres, including top-40 pop, R&B, country, hard rock and classics from the 60s-90s (dropping the music from earlier decades as newer songs are added, now only reaching as far back as 1980). Thank goodness we have classic hits stations to keep the older songs alive on the airwaves!

Well, what you just described is Jack FM, the stations that "play what they want."

You should check out KUNV Las Vegas sometime (they stream online). I've heard them mix smooth jazz with some...interesting things.

(There are very few stations in the continental US that regularly play Hawaiian music, but KUNV is one of them.)
