As a professional restaurant bartender, and someone who has always preferred to be up late at night and sleep during the day as much as possible, for me it's very much variable.
I tend to get home from work between 11-12 at night on Friday Saturday and Sunday, and I'm at work from 930 to 3 Monday through Wednesday. Sometimes I'll work Tuesday or Wednesday night instead of during the day.
But I like being up at night so on days when I work 10-3, I get 3-4 hours, then take a nap when i get home so I can be up most of the night. When I work a night shift, I go to sleep around 6 am and sleep until 2 ish. On my day off, I make up my sleep deficit. Because I'll go to bed like at 12 on Wednesday night and sleep until 12-3 pm Thursday.

My sleep patterns are...unusual and likely unhealthy lol.

Things change fast sometimes. I was a server/bartender/manager for a long time. I would regularly be up until 2 or 3 every night. Then I became the food and beverage director at a hotel and we did three meals a day, so I opened three days a week and had to be at work at 5:30. Now I'm an early bird.

I won't lie.  It was pretty great having the Lions gate over before 9 PM last night.  Not that the Lions played Monday Night Football when I was a kid.

I didn't love the sports timing when I lived in Seattle. At the time, I was still serving and I missed being able to get off work, grab a beer and watch the end of the west coast games. Mountain time is the best for sports for sure.

Some people can do that, but I have a fantasy football team and engage live on internet forums about football so that's really not gonna work for me.

If I manage to go through with my plan to finish my math degree and become a HS math teacher, I'm going to have to totally change my circadian rhythm for sure. I'm just not and never have been a morning person.

Wonder if you actually need a degree in mathematics to teach HS math...

Unless its a Packer game, or a playoff game of any other team I follow, I'm not setting my schedule around live sports.
For me it would be any of the Chicago teams whenever I visit, but other than that, I'll be in bed by 11, and up by 6.

It often seems like I get 6 during the work week, but 7 or 8 on weekends.

Quote from: kphoger on September 22, 2025, 09:45:04 AMI'm not voting, because the only two options with a range are "5 hours or less" and "9 hours or more".  The amount of sleep I get is not a whole number of hours, so forget the poll.

My wife and I typically get about 7¼ to 7¾ hours of sleep.  Generally 10:15–10:45 pm to 6:00 am.
Quote from: vdeane on September 22, 2025, 10:35:15 AMI think rounding can be assumed; I thought about making them ranges, but it seemed like I'd lose an option (the first would have had to be less than 6 or the last more than 8; in hindsight, that might have actually worked).

Still not doing it, because my average of 7½ hours still doesn't round easily.

I mean the games don't end that late. If I work a 9-5 it's fine going to bed from 11-12. But I'm young so maybe that will change.

That's one (minor) thing I think would be a weird adjustment if I moved to the East Coast - if I went to bed at my normal time (10:30-11:00) in, say, April (when there's MLB, NBA, and NHL) there'd still be a bunch of games going on (including, of course, my hometown teams).

I get about 7½ hours per night - 10:30 to 6:00 or 11:00 to 6:30. Varies depending on the whims of dogs, kid, etc.

....

We just deal with it when teams go on a West Coast, or Western Canadian, roadtrip and the games all start at the wrong time of night. You either stay up late or you record it to watch a day or so later (and, to be fair, avoiding spoilers can be a challenge if you care about that).

I watch F1, so I deal with that same problem there in the other direction (races too early in the morning).

I go to sleep at about 10:00-10:15 PM each day unless I have an event that goes later. I wake up naturally at anywhere between 6 AM and 7:45 AM. I think my average is slightly under 9, but still closer to 9 than 8.

I think it works well, as I don't have problems with lack of sleep like almost everyone else seems to have.

Weekdays I average about 8-9 hours. I start getting tired / get ready for bed between 9:00-10:00, and I wake up at 6:00 for work.

Weekends it's about the same, but I usually wake up around 7:00 / 7:30 (my cat insists upon it).

JayhawkCO

I'm probably closer to 9 than I am to 8 every night, but I just made a choice unlike kphoger:awesomeface:

My alarm went off, I got up to get ready for my shower, I went to the bathroom, looked up at the bathroom clock, and saw that I had accidentally set my alarm clock an hour early for the first time in decades.  Fell back to sleep when I went back to bed, though.

Nursing home doesn't sound that bad.

I wish I had that luxury. If it's past 4:00 am and I wake up and do anything that requires even a modicum of brain power, I'm resigned to being awake for the day.

I don't think that my body is capable of sleeping for more than 7-8 hours. I will just wake up and not fall back asleep.

If I sleep much longer than about nine hours, then I end up with a headache.  But I think it's primarily because I'm tossing and turning, pretending to be asleep, for that last one or two hours.

You may not think of it as such, but it is actually a luxury to have that large of a window to wake up. Most people have to be up well before 7:45, and for those of us with nocturnal tendencies, pushing the lower bound earlier just doesn't work.

It depends how fast you get ready. When I had classes at 9 I would wake up at 8:15 and get to class at time but I don't shower in the morning (I shower at night).
