The new cable-stayed bridge near the tripoint of Paraguay, Brazil and Argentina at Ciudad del Este is pretty much completed, and an inauguration is expected in the near future.

Another project linking up to this is a 32 kilometer dual carriageway bypass of Ciudad del Este. However according to satellite imagery, it's still some time away from completion.

It's part of a 50 kilometer Ciudad del Este / Foz do Iguaçu bypass:

All of PY02 has been upgraded to a divided highway from 2020 - 2024. PY02 is arguably the most important road of Paraguay, as it links Asunción to Ciudad del Este.

It's not a freeway, but a four lane (sometimes six lane) highway with roundabouts, residential and business access and an occasional interchange. Most of it was expanded to four lanes in-situ, with some greenfield alignments around larger towns.

Ciudad del Este is the main port of entry of Paraguay, linking up to Brazil (see previous post). It has a reputation for being a rather seedy city, but it attracts a lot of cross-border shoppers from Brazil.

According to Wikipedia:
Smuggling is a major occupation in the city, with some estimates putting the value of this black market at five times the national economy. It is reported that Lebanese immigrants with links to Hezbollah are operating money laundering activities and cocaine trafficking in the city.

Good projects, but it's interesting that so many countries do not include full shoulders like the United States and Canada has. Why is this?
