Denny’s to close locations

There was a Denny's about 1/2 mile from our house. I don't recall if I ate there or not. I did eat in the building at least twice after Denny's had closed and a local restaurant took it over. They had decent 50's drive-in style food. But it burned and never reopened. There's a car wash at the site now.

Off the top of my head I can't remember where there's a Denny's in my area now.

My only time was in Whittier, AK. Got back from our glacier cruise and found a restaurant. We were told to seat ourselves. Pretty much every table was dirty except a 6-top table over by the bathroom. So, my wife and I wandered over to a 4-top by the window that had some glassware on it, and started to pull out the chairs and had barely gotten our glutes on the seat before a server came over (actually) yelling that that table was dirty. Well, yeah, but 90% are. It's not like we expected it to be cleaned that very second, not like we had much of a choice, and I had actually moved everything to the end of the table for ease of bussing. My wife and I just looked at each other and said with our eyes that we were peaceing out. Never been yelled at a server for trying to give them business before.

Tangential, but I got food poisoning from a roast beef sandwich eight months ago (local place, not an Arby's). I have wanted nothing to do with roast beef since.

Every time I've been to a Denny's it's when I've been > 25 miles from a Waffle House.
Indiana: counties 100%, highways 100%
Illinois: counties 100%, highways 61%
Michigan: counties 100%, highways 56%
Wisconsin: counties 86%, highways 23%

You've gotten farther than I have. I haven't managed to actually get seated at a Denny's; I just stood around the hostess stand waiting for someone to show up for about ten minutes, before we decided fuck this and went elsewhere.

Last month I made my first visit to a Bob Evans in a very long time when in central Ohio.  I was pleasantly surprised, all around.  It was pretty busy there on a Tuesday midday, but I think I was one of very few there who wasn't either a grandparent, or a preschool kid there with a grandparent.  A lot of obvious regulars.

We don't have many Denny's left in the Philadelphia area. Don't think they can compete with local diners.

My wife signed us both of us for the free birthday Slam which means we at least visit Denny's twice a year.  Usually, we'll stop in the on Clovis Avenue or Blackstone Avenue a handful of times outside of that.  I used to visit the Denny's in Ruidoso, NM on work trips regularly.  It was open early and at the time was a good place to get a decent amount of food which didn't cost a fortune.

Bob Evans is actually quite good. Not as much menu variety as Cracker Barrel, but I like it.

That's me and shrimp. I got violently ill after eating some fried shrimp at Jim's Seafood (otherwise an excellent restaurant) in Frankfort about 28 years ago. I haven't eaten shrimp since, and won't ever again.

I've ordered online at the Denny's by me, and it's been alright as far as getting my food goes but I'd rather go to Leo's Coney Island than Denny's, at least at Leo's they have your order ready when you get there. There is only one Denny's location in Metro Detroit, it's in Taylor on Eureka Road. I really thought that Denny's had more of a presence in Metro Detroit, even Ram's Horn has fewer locations than I thought they did. The next closest Denny's to me is in East Lansing and that one does pretty good with the late-night crowd.

About all I can say about Denny's is that 4 years before I moved here, I was at the now-shuttered location at the Pilot truck stop in Clear Lake. My mom (it was my parents and my brother as well) ran into old high school classmates there, which is odd, being she's originally from SW Minnesota. I like telling my Clear Lake coworkers I was there once.

Now that I think of it, I did go to the West St. Paul, MN Denny's once in the post-Covid era.

One memorable experience I had at Denny's: a long time ago around the 1998 time frame, some friends and I were eating breakfast at a Denny's on the East side of Dallas around Garland. We partied in Deep Ellum the night before. I noticed one of the ice cubes in my glass of water -it had part of a cockroach leg frozen inside. The manager comped our breakfast.

Some of you probably don't want to look too deeply into restaurant health inspections.  If dig far enough with any establishment, you'll find things you won't like.

I've never encountered any at any of the Denny's I ate at.

I was disappointed to find the one on NC 4 near I-95 at Exit 145 closed. The one I eat most often at is at the Flying J on FL 52 near I-75 at Exit 285. I hope they don't close that one.

I've never encountered anything at a Denny's that would be a hyper overt health code violation either.

The Denny's in Salem NH closed permanently because of health code violations.

Okay cool, I can think of several non-chain restaurants of that were more well thought of than Denny's which struggled with health code issues also.  Some of them also closed because of like problems.

I find the health code letter grade signs posted in Clark County to be kind of funny. (Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that's a California practice we imported.) I don't think I've seen one other than A, so I have to wonder what exactly one has to do to get a B, C, or D. (I assume someone with an F can't operate.)

Not long after I moved here and noticed these, I was still in the habit of checking the Oklahoma Reddit and saw someone who had made the opposite move (west coast to Oklahoma) asking what the deal was with nobody posting their health inspection grades and how anyone was expected to know if a restaurant was clean or not without it. The Oklahomans were pretty polite about breaking it to them that if you expect that kind of thing out of the government in Oklahoma you are setting yourself up for a bad time.

I think Alabama requires the scores from the health inspection to be posted where customers can see it. They don't use a letter system, however, but instead rate the business out of 100.
May or may not be batticorn.

I also collect traffic lights, road signs, fans, and railroad crossing equipment.

I look at as being similar to P65 stickers.  The intent was good but the execution as being a vehicle to inform doesn't work in practice.

Georgia posts both the letter grade and the numeric score.

In Oklahoma you just get a certificate from the county saying the restaurant meets acceptable standards. That's fun because different counties have different standards. When I worked at Burger King we had to deal with this one woman calling for a solid week to complain that our cooks weren't wearing gloves in the kitchen. We would tell her that wasn't required. But she saw them wearing gloves at the Burger King in Goldsby! Well, that's in McClain County and McClain County requires that but Cleveland County doesn't. And it'd go on and on until we found a reason to hang up on her and she'd call back later to talk to someone different.

Six minutes pass. I get a message. "We're outside delivery area. I blame you lol"

I am now 0-2 being able to actually order at Denny's.

Quote from: JayhawkCO on December 04, 2025, 10:57:28 AMMy best recollection is that it's been about 18-20 years since I've been in one.

The last time I was in one was about 20-25 years ago, when I got in to SeaTac in the middle of the night and was starving and Denny's was the only place.  It was okay.

Time before that was at a different Denny's and there was broken glass in the food.  They did refund my money but it was still gross.  I haven't sought Denny's out since then.

Yeah, the venture capitalists are only called in when it's time to strip the bones.
