I have been perusing Google Maps this evening, and am curious if anyone knows why I-90 in western Cleveland has extra space reserved in the median west of Downtown (Alger Road east to near I-71).

It looks somewhat deliberate, and I am curious if there was ever a plan to do something with the space in the median.  A transit line for example.  I know very little about Cleveland's freeway network, so any insight would be appreciated.

These planning studies from the 1950's and 1960's might help.  There's a separate section/link for the Northwest Freeway segment:

You're just like crosstown traffic
All you do is slow me down
And I got better things on the other side of town

The most plausible reason for that wide median is that was the area where the canceled Parma Freeway would have crossed I-90 en route to it's northern terminus at the West Shoreway and W. 45th.

A similar proposed intersection can be seen on I-71 near Ridge Road.  The Parma Freeway would have run in the I-71 median for about a mile or so.

The only remnant of the Parma Freeway is the long "stub" ramp from I-71 North at the Denison/W. 65th left exit.
