I know the one of the oldest jokes on the internet is the one about the McDonald's ice cream machine always being broken I am sick and tired of those jokes, every time I go to McDonald's (at least the ones in my area), the ice cream machine works about 99% of the time, just please stop with these jokes

You probably live in an area with a good Taylor vendor repair person. Or your local McDonald's has a different ice cream maker rather than the Taylor C602. Congratulations.

Like a Super 2 or an Expressway; it's technically almost, but not quite, entirely unlike ice cream.

What's interesting is that when I worked at Burger King we had a Taylor milkshake machine. So far as I know, it never actually broke down.

Now, that being said, we did have to empty it every night to wash and sanitize the parts. And that took long enough we would do it before close, so if someone came through asking for a milkshake late at night we'd have to tell them the machine was down. So every time I heard of a McDonald's ice cream machine being down, I assumed that was what was going on. I didn't find out that McDonald's machines really did break down until years after I stopped working at BK.

Yeah, that's what my daughter told me would happen. It was sometimes "down" but not "broken", because staying longer than 90-120  minutes after an 11pm-midnight close is brutal enough.

I only went to McDonald's one or twice to have them tell me the machine was broken

I don't go to McDonald's for milkshakes. I go to Whataburger and get real ones.

For my store that was once a week, Wednesday nights. I hated it because it was a lot of individual parts, a lot of them small and a lot of them difficult to separate from one another.

Lucky, we had to do it every night. Though our machine didn't really have that many parts (I want to say it was the big swirly thing inside the ice cream chamber, the thing that turned the swirly thing, the face plate, the four knobs that held the face plate on, the O ring, and a vent tube that stuck up out of the ice cream reservoir).

I've never gone to McDonald's to have them tell me the machine was broken.  I've always gone there to have them sell me some ice cream, but sometimes they'd tell me it was broken.  Hey, you can't always get what you want.

(Actually, that's a lie.  I've only ever ordered ice cream at McDonald's one time.  But the machine was broken, so that makes a 0% success rate for me.)

(I've also only ever ordered ice cream at a Whataburger one time, and the machine was broken there too, so that's another 0% success rate for me.)

In-n-Out has a vastly superior milkshake compared to McDonald's.  I haven't gotten a McDonald's milkshake since returning to the west coast in 2016.  I didn't exactly keep spreadsheets on my milkshake consumption before 2016.

I'll have one with a meal like once a year. I've had maybe three McFlurries in my life, probably the same from Whataburger...I liked that Dr. Pepper one.

Culver's has spoiled me into getting the kids meal so I can get a dollop of custard along with a not-gut-busting meal.

I'll give you that Whataburger is sparing on the chocolate syrup, but their Banana Pudding shake is ace.

That approximates how many times I eat at McDonald's at all in a year.  Actually, I suppose I probably eat there less often than that.

Well, I meant collectively throughout all the fast food burger joints. For example, I don't think I've had a Wendy's Frosty in over thirty years and never had the equivalent at Burger King, In-and-Out, nor Freddie's. The mood just doesn't strike me that much unless I see a flavor that I'll probably never see again on a hot day (memo to Steak & Shake: I'd definitely eat there more if the Nutella shake was a regular item).

I probably wind up at McDonald's 2-3 times a year because that might be the only thing around on the road and the kids are hangry or I wound up on the outskirts of the middle of nowhere finding a new county or whatever and I really wanted a McRib.

Memo to Steak & Shake:  I'd eat there more if it were still the 1990s and your quality hadn't yet fallen off a cliff.
