I'm pretty sure he is a member of the Freeways of Los Angeles Facebook group.  That is probably one of the more forum-like of the road groups on that platform.

I don't think being interested in one sign necessarily makes you a road geek.  Plenty of nonroadgeeks are obviously interested in driving US 66.

but it wasn't just one sign.  it was one sign and the history of the road it was pointing too.

It also ran parrallel to a railroad track. If you look at Gogle Maps, you can find where there had been a railraod track running from the old northern section of Appian Way and then southeast to the existing Appian Way.
