I really like this style of LGS, and I wish these would become standard at all freeway interchanges statewide, even (and perhaps especially) in urban and suburban areas.

The MUTCD allows for either style, and most DOTs choose the cheaper options for obvious reasons.

BTW, does anyone know more about the missing exit numbers along the corridor? Why is there no exit 5, 88, 91, or 95? I know exits 22 and 55 were unbuilt, and exit 117 was removed at one point.

The Ghostbuster

I understand (though disagree) why the first exit in New York is numbered Exit 4, since 1, 2, and 3 were in Pennsylvania. Missing sequential exit numbers is exactly why the conversions to mileage-based exits should happen to remaining sequential exit numbers in New York and beyond.

3: ???
5: ???
22: reserved for the US 219 freeway

85: used for Hale Eddy at-grade
86: used for Silver Lake Road (Hale Eddy at-grade)
88: ??? (possibly Tyler Switch)
91: reserved for Peakville
95: ??? (possibly Hazel)
117: removed interchange (Tarbell Road)
118A: removed interchange (NY 17M)

Exit 3 is former exit 2, so that was originally a missing number as well.  No idea what it was for, unless NY wanted to prepare for PA going mile-based by NY remaining sequential (which is ultimately what happened).

117 is Tarbell Road (wb only; and will be on the meet I'm hosting next year).

I wrote down what 88 and 95 were for and I gotta find it again. (I believe I had 88 for Tyler Switch, because they built a section of the Quickway between TS and East Branch and 95 for Hazel.)

91: Peakville (eliminated in planning)
original planned 92: Chiloway (eliminated in planning)

Oh yeah, I remember that now.  I had located it when I did the 1999 April Fool's Day prank for my site, but alas, I can't find the files from that.  I've edited it and the others into my post; maybe I'll have to add them to the I-86/NY 17 article, or the description at the top of the exit list.

I'll have to keep an eye out for that roadmeet.  I expect to be somewhat tight with time off next year (at least relative to this year and the past couple), so something in daytrip range will be welcome.

I've mentioned before, though, how some of the missing exit numbers that were cancelled could be filled through some simple renumbering to eliminate any duplicate exit numbers, like 55 to eliminate the two 59s, 88 to eliminate the two 87s, and 95 to eliminate the two 100s.

IIRC someone mentioned that such actually was looked at.  I'm not sure why they ultimately didn't.  At least they still used 57 to make sure we didn't get two 58s.

Now that is the weird one.  What's the point of 87A if there's no 88?

Exits 59 and 59A should be Exits 201 and 203. Exits 87 and 87A should be Exits 285 and 287. Exits 100A and 100 should be Exits 326A and 326B. Exits 4-131 should be numbered Exits 1-380. That would solve all problems.

87A was an after construction request by local business owners wanting an exit east of Hancock.
