I could be mistakened, but isn't I-55 already six lanes to the north and south of Springfield, but not within Springfield itself. It seems like it should be the other way around if anything at all.

Yes, 55 is 3 lanes south of where 72 splits to the west and north of where it splits to the east.  None of the 55/72 multiplex is 6 lanes, which is absolutely ridiculous.

Years ago many of the bridges along the 4-lane section were widended, but has temp. barrier placed to keep traffic off the wide sections.
