Large Purple Markers on US 192 in the Disney Resort Area

I am sure that many have seen the tall purple markers with reference numbers near Disney World.  They start at Marker 4 just east of FL 429 and climb all the way to 15 near the Shingle Creek bridge.  They are not in miles cause I measured it via my own vehicle's odometer,  and I have no way of checking kilometers due to the lack of measuring tools for metric.  Does anyone know if it is intended for metric measure or is it something else that may be Disney created?

Also, is it FDOT that erected them or is it the Kissimmee- St. Cloud Tourism Board?  They are not continuous as they drop from sight at the Kissimmee City Line and they are no where to be found east of Shingle Creek even though the tourist area goes all the way to St. Cloud.

Perhaps businesses paid extra to have a marker right in front of them.

They're intended to serve a similar use to the mile markers in the Keys, but they aren't calibrated to any fixed distance. Maybe the hotels and tourists buses use them, but I've never heard anyone actually navigate by them.

The markers on US 192 are also referenced on some BGSs near the FL 535/Poinciana Blvd exit on Osceola Parkway. So far, that's been the only time I've seen another roadway mention the markers on its signs.

I've used them once or twice to help other people find the hotel where I was staying, but those people were not too familiar with US 192 to begin with. I find that with locals, we mostly use cross-streets to locate a business.

They once had them on the exit signs for SR 535 on Osceola Parkway showing what reference markers the road led to.  I also think that they once had them to on Osceola Parkway at Sieralago Road, but cannot remember.  Alpsroads has the sign at the 535 exit on his CR 522/ Osceola Parkway page shown twice in his gallery.

One thing I will say is the signs are cool!  They look backlit at night, but they are not!  The assembly simply just reflects headlights and it appears to be that way. 

Regardless, even though there is no set pattern of measurement here, I am sure they help find establishments along the way.
