US-311 in Winston-Salem, NC

What are the long-term plans for US-311 through Winston-Salem and Forsyth County in North Carolina?

My inquiry comes from its interchange with I-40 at exit 196.  There are several ghost ramps around the intersection with the intent of extending US-311 northward of I-40 along Winston-Salem eastern stretches toward US-158 (Reidsville Road) and Walkertown.

My recollection is that there were plans to connect the US 311 freeway to US 311 northeast of town, but were never carried through. Now, there are active plans for the Northern Beltway (I-74) to connect to US 311 freeway between Union Cross and Ridgewood Road interchanges. This beltway will interchange with I 40, I 40 Business, US 158, US 311 and US 52. Construction is supposed to start soon on the first leg between US 158 and I 40 Business.

Funny enough they will stay ghost ramps for the time being, because the "East Belt" (I-74) will be built a mile or two east of the current interchange you mentioned.

It is official that US 311 on the SE side of Winston may and (hopefully) will be signed I-74 all the way to I-40 (and very soon the last leg of the I-74 corridor in Randolph Co. will open) I-74 will then proceed north around the Union Cross Rd intersection to I-40 and Business 40, but is years away.

There is a funded stretch of the East Belt from Bus 40 to US 158 that will start construction in 2014.

As far as I know though even with the construction of I-74, US 311 will continue to follow I-40 and US 52 as it does now.

I always thought the ghost ramps meant more too though lol.

Just to share, here is NCDOT's project page for the Winston-Salem Northern Beltway: http://www.ncdot.gov/projects/wsnb/

Hopefully, US 311 will move onto the beltway when the eastern section is completed.

That document is about US 311/I 74 from I 40 to Cedar Square Road (the High Point Bypass) which is currently open and signed I 74/US 311. The discussion has been about the Winston-Salem Northern Beltway, which is a future beltway around Winston-Salem. This belt will carry I 74. Whether it will carry US 311 is not known.

Robert Malme is an excellent source for anything related to I-74, this directly relates to the Winston-Salem Northern Belt (Eastern side, funded)
