What is this? Old Thruway Alignment?

Returning from Poughkeepsie (and my I-587 clinch ) I noticed what looked like it might be an old Thruway alignment near NY 23A.  Anyone know?

Actually, it is the old end of the Thruway before it was extended up to Exit 21 (NY 23) and beyond way back in the very late 1950s.

I am always amazed at how well the old ROW holds up, especially on the old toll roads in the NE. The grading is still intact around Exit 39 off the Thruway, old PA Turnpike Alignments through the tunnel, the ghost ramps to/from service areas at several locations on the PA, NJ Pikes and Berkshire Thruway; and the ghost ramps at the NY/MA line on the Berkshire section... Perhaps it is not so important to completely bury the old structures, or perhaps it's just testament to how well roadbeds were built...

The old Thruway end at NY 23A is still used often as a parking area for heavy equipment to maintain the Thruway, stored Jersey barriers, traffic cones, fencing, signs, concrete pilings, salt, sand, etc.  The stone rockface on the hill immediately adjacent to this old exit ramp is also quite substantial.

There's also the Lost Exit 20 on the Thruway, which now exists as a parking area around Malden-on-Hudson.

I think there's a few traces of original Exit 38 (Route 57 Liverpool) on the WB Thruway.

Of course there is the new and old Exit 39 3 miles west of there.  I am amazed at what that exit looked like in 1956, in 1972, and now.  Look how the Jones Road interchange had to be re-figured when exit 39 was moved.

I know this thread deals with the mainline Thruway alignments and not interchanges.  I haven't found any other old alignments on Historic Aerials.

Speaking of old alignments, it looks like the Interstate 81/Thruway interchange (Exit 36) was vastly different back in 1956. From what I can tell, it was the Thruway that exited onto 7th North Street (I-81 Exit 25). I believe I-81 was actually US Route 11 routed over the "Syracuse Expressway" that ran from Northern Lights to Downtown at Salina and Clinton Streets.

we do business with someone from Poolville and they misprinted Pooville on a set of envelopes.  They kept using them but then months later corrected them.  6 months ago Pooville appeared again including one we got today. Never ceases being funny that they actually use them.

I don't know why the interchange was re-done unless there were some curvature issues with the ramps.

I know that the Exit 36 was originally labeled "US 11 Syracuse" when the Thruway opened.  The second version of the (now) Interstate 81 to 7th North Street ramps were rebuilt in 1983 due to curvature issues when that whole stretch from Northern Lights to 7th North Street was rebuilt, but that didn't really impact the Thruway ramps.

It was probably changed to remove the traffic light at 7th North St.

I pass by Catskill most times I head to Vermont.  Figured it was an old Thruway terminus point before the rest got built.  It's got the right grade/alignment for it.
