Unique types of restricted lanes

Well, here's a new one that I saw in Austin, TX the other day: http://goo.gl/maps/skQaO

A few things immediately occur to me about that one. First, obviously, it's nice to see my own profession get some shout-out from a traffic control device. :-) That said, this is the sort of thing that's usually covered by a parking sign rather than an HOV-style restricted lane sign, and moreover would typically fall under a general commercial loading zone restriction.

Although I've no reason to doubt this sign is legitimately enacted and posted by city ordinances and whatnot, the fact that it's more narrowly restricted to a specific sort of commercial loading than usual, along with being an unorthodox type of signage for this kind of purpose, gives me the distinct impression that there's more than a hint of the marketing gimmick behind it as well.

It was my feeling during my brief visit that musicians, and more broadly, the artsy-funky-hip type of personality for which Austin is famous, seem to occupy a similar place in the city's socio-economic fabric as the Amish do in Lancaster County. Yes, there are many who genuinely embody and practice the lifestyle as a normal part of who they are, and then there are equally many who promote and sell that fact for us visitors to observe and enjoy. So in a way, that sign I've linked to seems to serve a similar function to a "horse-and-buggy-parking-only" sign you might see in Intercourse, PA.

Oh, right...my whole point was this: HOV-2, HOV-3, Buses, Buses and Right Turns, Taxis, Bicycles, Musicians...what other unusual classes of traffic have you seen marked on signs of this type?

Here are a few:

- E-ZPass or E-ZPass Flex (for HOV-3) only.

- Transit buses only.

- Streetcars and transit buses only.

- HOV-4 only (not any longer).

It's fun, but it's a little much on a Saturday night. While I'm glad that there are thriving destinations for live music (people often wonder why they should have to pay for music, yet seem to display an insatiable appetite for consuming it), as a musician myself I often find myself avoiding it, especially after work. After all, I've never known an accountant to seek out a bar where everyone was preparing tax returns at their table!

I've played a few gigs that a sign like this would have been useful (especially when the venue doesn't have any sound equipment, so you have to bring that and your instruments.).

But more on-topic, the first sign(s) that comes to mind is the "Buses, Bikes & Right Turns Only" right-most lanes on the Coastal Highway (MD-528) in Ocean City, MD.
I don't have opinions anymore. All I know is that no one is better than anyone else, and everyone is the best at everything
