I've loaded a USGS topo WMS layer (http://raster.nationalmap.gov/ArcGIS/services/DRG/TNM_Digital_Raster_Graphics/MapServer/WMSServer) into QGIS, and it works fine. The only problem is that whenever I pan it reloads the whole thing from the server, which takes 10-30 seconds each time. Is there a way to somehow cache the images, or does this only work for a TMS?

(Also, is there a way to keep the layer I'm editing active when checking the box to show/hide other layers?)

Mr. Matté

When you first load the WMS layer, do you click the radio button in Image Encoding to .JPEG instead of the default .PNG? I do have the slow reloading every time I make a little pan, but since it's loading a .jpeg, there's less bytes to download (but you're also sacrificing quality as well).

Thanks - that's somewhat better. I thought maybe setting tile size would fix the problem, but it seems to merely split what you're viewing into tiles and download them new (it's all "cache misses").
