when did VA start using Clearview?  or did I just fail to notice, and/or succeed in repressing the trauma?

this is a right proper 17 shield!

From the east coast to the west coast... another 17/1 combination...

If I owned a dam and decided to donate it to charity, would I be giving a dam? I'm sure that might be a first because no one really gives a dam.

CA-17 now ends at San Jose, but it used to go along the 880 to Oakland, and then up the 580 to San Rafael.  Here, near the MacArthur Maze, is a sign on which the I-580 patch fell off, revealing the old CA-17 shield.  The patch for WEST, over the original NORTH, stayed on, yielding the somewhat incongruous "west 17".

I went back the next morning to get a daylight photo, but by then it had been re-patched!

the I-80 shields cover up US-40 shields.  The green patches are barely visible; those were placed around 1964.  The first I-580 patch was placed around 1988 when I-580 was extended from the Altamont Pass routing (Oakland to I-5 near Tracy) to cover Oakland to San Rafael as well, getting rid of CA-17.  I-880 came in at the same time, too, as did I-980.  Why CA suddenly needed more interstate numbers, I will never know ... that's how we ended up with the disaster known as I-238, because CA-17 was just not good enough as a number.

edit by AgentSteel53: it is sufficient to specify "width=800" only for a resize.  Specifying both width and height may change the aspect ratio, which it did in this case.  I knew Georgia used some narrow fonts on their green signs, but ... dang!

Moving to Ohio...

These signs have since been replaced.

About time, albeit with sadness, those signs were originally installed in 1978, and I'd be willing to bet that those were the 2nd generation of signs for that stretch of freeway which opened in the 60s.

I wish they had put button copy on the US and state shields too... but that was not their policy.  I don't think I've ever seen a US or state shield in Ohio on a guide sign that had button copy.

staying in Ohio ... I'm pretty sure these shields have been replaced!  State route 21 was US 21 at one point.

you can see that the US-21 shield has buttons in it.  The 250 might, too, but I cannot tell.
