The double deck section of the Central Avenue Bridge from the west banks of the Kansas River in Kansas City, KS. 10/31/16

The Central Avenue Bridge spans the Kansas River between Central Avenue at the Riverview neighborhood and James Street in the Central Industrial District in Kansas City, Kansas. Measuring 3,450 feet in length, the two-level deck truss bridge was built in 1918. The upper roadway is a four lane concrete deck while the lower roadway is a 22 foot wide steel deck.1

Extensive deterioration of the Central Avenue Bridge bottom truss members was discovered during an evaluation of the span by a firm contracted by the Unified Government (UG). The Wyandotte County Engineer ordered the immediate closure of the bridge on February 1, 2021 for further analysis and do the potential failure of the span.2
