SR 510 connects U.S. 1 and CR 510 (85th Street) at Wabasso with the town of Orchid and SR A1A across the A.B. Michael Bridge. The 2.61 mile long state road represents one of three bridges spanning the Intracoastal Waterway between inland Indian River County and the barrier island.
Replacing a swing bridge, the high rise span taking SR 510 across the Indian River opened to traffic in 1970. A request by the Board of County Commissioners in 1964 called for naming the future crossing the A.B. Michael Bridge, after an Orchid Island citrus grower who brought world wide attention to Indian River citrus. A likely typo due to the ten years it took to construct the span, State Road 510 Bridge No. 53 was designated by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) as the A.B. Mitchell Bridge. A resolution passed by the County Commissioners on September 17, 2019 requested that the Florida Legislature redesignate the crossing as the A.B. Michael Bridge.1
