SR 586 follows Curlew Road across the city of Dunedin, unincorporated Curlew and along the north Clearwater city line. Traveling 5.332 miles overall, the state road originates at U.S. 19 Business (Bayshore Boulevard) and Causeway Boulevard (CR 586) to the west. The state road follows a three lane boulevard east along Curlew Creek to CR 1 (Omaha Street), where it expands into a divided, four lane arterial. East from U.S. 19, SR 586 widens again to six lanes, continuing to a wye intersection with Tampa Road (CR 752 west / SR 584 east) in the city of Oldsmar.

Construction (Project 256774-3-52-01) anticipated to start in 2021 2022 early 2023 extends the six lane, controlled access portion of U.S. 19 north from Northside Drive to County Road 95. Work through Fall 2029 includes the addition of a frontage road system and a grade separated interchange with SR 586 (Curlew Road).

The first shield for SR 586 east stands beyond the intersection joining CR 586 (Causeway Boulevard) with U.S. 19 Alternate (Bayshore Boulevard).
