Traveling 5.332 miles overall, the state road originates at U.S. 19 Business (Bayshore Boulevard) and Causeway Boulevard (CR 586) to the west. The state road follows a three lane boulevard east along Curlew Creek to CR 1 (Omaha Street), where it expands into a divided, four lane arterial. East from U.S. 19, SR 586 widens again to six lanes, continuing to a wye intersection with Tampa Road (CR 752 west / SR 584 east) in the city of Oldsmar.
