Interstate 35 North - McLennan County


SH 7 begins at Bruceville-Eddy and travels 213.91 miles east to meet US 84 at Joaquin near the Sabine River and Louisiana state line. FM 107 extends west from SH 7 at Exit 315 from here to Moody. Widening of IH 35 from 2012 to Fall 2018 here realigned the freeway roadways and rebuilt the split diamond interchange with 3rd Street.

IH 35 through the city of Bruceville-Eddy was originally constructed around 1960. Exit 319 (old Exit 318A) to Grider Street and Old Moody Road in Bruceville was relocated northward ahead of the frontage road turnaround by the UP Railroad bridge during 2012-18 widening.

Proceeding north from Exit 319 to Woodlawn Road, IH 35 reaches the city of Lorena. The 9.6 mile long six lane expansion north to Woodlawn Road cost $120.7 million. Work on the succeeding 9.8 mile section to Moonlight Drive ran concurrently from early 2012 to Fall 2017.1

FM 2837 angles northwest from IH 35 at Lorena 8.26 miles to U.S. 84 in west Waco. The eastern branch of FM 2837 connects IH 35 with U.S. 77, 7.61 miles northeast at Rosenthal within the city limits of Robinson.

The $169.4 million project1 reconstruction IH 35 north to Moonlight Drive replaced the original 1960-designed freeway. New ramps (Exit 325) for FM 1695 (Hewitt Drive) west, Old Temple Road north and FM 3148 (Moonlight Drive) east were built south of Bull Hide Creek.

FM 3148 angles northeast 5.68 miles along Moonlight Drive to U.S. 77 in Robinson. FM 1695 (Hewitt Drive) winds 5.94 miles northwest through the city of Hewitt and west Waco to U.S. 84 at Woodway.

Exit 328 was relocated to an egress point two miles south of FM 2063/2113 during 2012-17 widening of IH 35 through Hewitt. FM 2113 leads 16.03 miles southwest from Hewitt to Sun Valley and FM 107 at the city of Moody. FM 2063 constitutes a 1.58 mile link west to FM 3476 (Old Temple Road) and FM 1695 (Hewitt Drive).

Six lane widening of IH 35 north 3.4 miles from Sun Valley Boulevard to SH 6/SL 340 and New Road was completed between May 2008 and March 2012 at a cost of $88.4 million.2

A cloverstack interchange (Exits 330A/B) joins IH 35 with SH 6 and SL 340, which collectively form an expressway bypass encircling the city of Waco.

New Road weaves across the south side of Waco west from IH 35 to Spur 298 (Franklin Avenue) and east to Garden Drive at the Robinson city line.

Loop 396 follows a 3.78 mile long portion of old SH 6 along Valley Mills Drive west from the Waco Traffic Circle with U.S. 77 (Robinson Drive) and U.S. 77 Business (La Salle Avenue) to Bosque Boulevard.

U.S. 77 Business (La Salle Avenue) loops east from IH 35 at Irving Lee Street and Exit 333A to Baylor University and SL 484 across the Brazos River. SL 396 connects with SH 6, 5.13 miles to the west at the Parkdale Viking Hills neighborhood in Waco.

Exit 333B departs ahead of Valley Mills Drive and the flyover joining SL 396 east with IH 35 north for the Jack Kultgen Freeway frontage road ahead of 24th Street. U.S. 77 branches northwest from La Salle Avenue (U.S. 77 Business) to connect with IH 35 via forthcoming 18th and 17th Streets.

Construction running from Spring 2019 to Spring 2014 widens IH 35 north from 17th Street six miles to North Loop 340 to eight overall lanes. The $341.2 million project eliminates the off-ramp (Exit 334A) at 18th Street and rebuilds the frontage road system from Exit 333B northward.3
