Interstate 80/94 West - Frank Borman Expressway

Exit 15A loops onto U.S. 6 east & SR 51 (Ripley Street) south from Interstate 94 west, just after traffic from Interstate 80 merges onto the Frank Borman Expressway.

I-80-94/U.S. 6 (Frank Borman Expressway) merge at Lake Station and continue west toward Interstate 65 (Exits 12B/A). Interstate 65 enters northwest SR 84 miles from Lafayette, serving the cities of Merrillville, Hobart, and Gary at its northern terminus. The next five interchanges of I-80-94/U.S. 6 west provide access into the city of Gary.

One mile east of Exits 12B/A with Interstate 65. Construction related to the Major Moves New Construction Interchange Modification upgraded the three-quarter cloverleaf interchange between the Borman and I-65 to include a new directional ramp for southbound and new ramps from Colorado Street west. Work began on the $189 million project in 2007¹ and was completed by summer 2011.

Two lanes exit off of the Borman Expressway onto a collector distributor road. To the right, an on-ramp from Central Avenue joins the new c/d setup. The left two lanes will continue toward Interstate 65 south and the Borman west and the right lane will follow Interstate 65 north to the Indiana Toll Road.

The right lane connects with Interstate 65 north to East 15th Avenue, Interstate 90 (Indiana East West Toll Road) and U.S. 12/20 (Dunes Highway) near the Aetna section of northeast Gary. A flyover ramp replaced a loop ramp by 2011 to join I-80 & 94 west with Interstate 65 south for Indianapolis and Louisville, Kentucky.

The Northwest Connector facilitates the movements between Interstate 65 north and I-80/94 west and the Frank Borman Expressway east to Interstate 65 south via wye interchanges at each end. This one mile overhead for SR 53 (Exits 10B/A) appears along the Northwest Connector north.

The Northwest Connector merges onto the Frank Borman Expressway west, 0.75 miles east of the six-ramp parclo interchange with SR 53 (Broadway). The connector was reconstructed during the Major Moves New Construction Interchange Modification project.

SR 53 follows Broadway north to its terminus at Interstate 90 (Indiana Toll Road) and the Gary Works U.S. Steel Plant outside downtown. Southward the state road continues to Merrillville.

The SR 53 (Broadway) exit ramp turns off at the one mile mark to the Grant Street exit (Exit 9). Grant Street connects I-80/94 with U.S. 12/20 (West 4th & 5th Avenues), west of downtown Gary, and U.S. 6 Business (Ridge Road) to the south.

Construction was finished in 2008 to completely rebuild the Frank Borman Expressway to modern standards. Interchanges with SR 53 (Exit 10) and Grant Street (Exit 9) were reconfigured from cloverleaf interchanges into parclos. The interchange with Burr Street (Exit 6) was also rebuilt from a diamond into a parclo. The highway itself was widened to four lanes in each direction with an auxiliary lane in between exits.

Exit 9 leaves I-80-94/U.S. 6 west for Grant Street. Next in line for westbound motorists is the Exit 6 parclo interchange with Burr Street.

Hammond represents the final city in Indiana along the Borman Expressway at a distance of seven miles. Downtown Chicago is 31 miles away via the Borman, Kingery, Bishop Ford and Dan Ryan Expressways.

A view of the heavy freight traffic that clogs up the Borman Expressway from underneath the Clark Street overpass. Because the Borman is a free highway (as opposed to the Indiana Toll Road and Chicago Skyway) it gets much heavier use, providing the impetus for the highway's reconstruction.

Exit 6 turns off onto Burr Street. Two truck stops line Burr Street north from I-80/94 to parallel 25th Avenue. Southward, in conjunction with Ridge Road west, leads driver to the town of Griffith.
Next, SR 912 (Cline Avenue) crosses paths with I-80-94/U.S. 6 along the Hammond and Gary city line. The state road follows a freeway north to East Chicago and an arterial south to U.S. 6 Business (Ridge Road) at Highland.

SR 912 constitutes a 12 mile route northward to East Chicago, Whiting, and north Hammond. Southward the state road comprises a surface boulevard to its terminus at U.S. 6 Business (Ridge Road) in Highland.

Exit 5 parts ways with I-80-94/U.S. 6 west for SR 912 (Cline Avenue). SR 912 mainly serves industrial interests in the Indiana Harbor area of East Chicago from the Borman and Indiana Toll Roads.

A collector distributor roadway facilitates the movements to SR 912 (Cline Avenue) from I-80-94/U.S. 6 (Borman Expressway) west at Exit 5. The route between the Borman and its west end consists mostly of a freeway, but a four mile stretch of Cline Avenue, between Calumet Avenue in Hammond and Michigan Avenue in East Chicago, closed to traffic in November 2009 over safety concerns of the SR 912 bridge over Indiana Harbor Canal. The bridge was demolished and will be rebuilt as at toll road.

Originally just a cloverleaf interchange, Exit 3 constitutes a directional cloverleaf with a flyover ramp joining I-80-94/U.S. 6 west with Kennedy Avenue south into Highland. Kennedy Avenue north continues into the Hessville section of southeast Hammond.

U.S. 41 follows Indianapolis Boulevard northward from Highland to its merge with I-80-94/U.S. 6 west. SR 152 begins and continues the boulevard north into Hammond, traveling 2.5 miles to its end at U.S. 20 (Michigan Street). Exit 2 serves Perdue University Calumet in southern Hammond.

Exit 2 branches away from I-80-94/U.S. 6 (Borman Expressway) west to U.S. 41 (Indianapolis Boulevard) south and SR 52 (Indianapolis Boulevard) north. U.S. 20 continues Indianapolis Boulevard northwest from SR 152 to a merge with U.S. 12 in East Chicago and U.S. 41 again in north Hammond. U.S. 41 south meanwhile connects Highland with Schererville along its 280 mile course between Hammond and Kentucky south of Evansville.

A lengthy collector distributor roadway departs in one mile carrying all westbound drivers destined for Interstate 94 (Bishop Ford Memorial Freeway) west (north) to Chicago and Illinois 394 south to Chicago Heights and Crete. Interstate 80 otherwise joins Interstate 294 on the Tri-State Tollway west of Lansing.
