Motorists joining I-85 north from I-285 can access the I-85 Express Lanes from an ingress point located one half mile east of the Northcrest Road overpass. An egress point there allows commuters bound for SR 140 to rejoin the general travel lanes as well.

I-85 north was expanded to seven lanes during work in 2008. This shifted the auxiliary lane to Exit 104 for Pleasant Hill Road outward. Pleasant Hill Road meanders south by a number of subdivisions beyond Club Drive to Ronald Reagan Parkway, a limited access highway maintained by Gwinnett County that winds east to SR 124 in Snellville.

A $147 million project between February 2006 and December 31, 2008 overhauled the forthcoming split with SR 316. Both I-85 and SR 316 were expanded with the addition of HOV lanes. C/d roadways were also constructed between Pleasant Hill Road and SR 120 while new ramps were added from SR 316 west to both I-85 south and the c/d roadway to Exit 104. The westbound ramps from SR 316 opened on October 22, 2007.1

The Express Lane exit for SR 316 was constructed as part of the aforementioned 2006-08 project.2 It departs in one mile as two lanes separate for the c/d roadway (Exit 105) to Boggs Road and SR 120 west to Duluth and east to Lawrenceville.
