Interstate 465 Outer Loop - Castleton to Speedway

Turning northwest, I-465 enters the Castleton and Allisonville area at Exit 35. Allisonville Road meets the beltway at commercialized exchange adjacent to Castleton Square mall. The arterial represents a former alignment of SR 37A from Binford Boulevard north to Noblesville. SR 37A was designated in the late 1960s and early 1970s.¹

82nd Street passes over Interstate 465 just ahead of the single point interchange (Exit 35) with Allisonville Road. Allisonville Road runs north from Castleton to Indianapolis Metropolitan Airport (UMP) and Fishers.

Exit 33 connects Interstate 465 with Keystone Avenue north to Carmel, which was SR 431 until October 19, 2007.¹ Turned over to the city of Carmel, the road was renamed Keystone Parkway and upgraded into controlled access expressway with dogbone interchanges at 106th Street, 116th Street, Carmel Drive, 126th Street, Main Street and 131st Street.²

Keystone Avenue meets I-465 by Keystone at the Crossings, a large area of business parks and retail that is home to upscale Fashion Mall. Addressing growing traffic demands, the exchange at Exit 33 was upgraded to a six-ramp parclo interchange in 2011.

Keystone Avenue extends 5.7 miles north from Exit 33 to the freeway along U.S. 31 in Carmel. Keystone Avenue south to Binford Boulevard (old SR 37) was also formerly part of SR 431.

A parclo interchange links Interstate 465 with Meridian Street within the two-wye exchange joining the beltway with U.S. 31 north at Exit 31. Meridian Street represents historic U.S. 31 southward to Williams Creek, Meridian Hills, Meridian-Kessler, Butler University and Downtown Indianapolis.

North from Exit 31, U.S. 31 (Meridian Street) runs by Home Place to north Carmel. U.S. 31 represents a major travel corridor north from the capital city to Kokomo and South Bend. Because of this, three segments of the highway were upgraded to freeways in the areas of Carmel and Westfield, Kokomo, and Plymouth to South Bend. Subsequent changes were made to upgrade the interchange with I-465 to allow for free flowing traffic.

Southbound I-465 expands to six lanes between 38th Street and Exit 16 for Interstate 74 west, U.S. 136 west and Crawfordsville Road. I-74 stretches west from Indianapolis to Peoria and the Quad Cities of Iowa and Illinois. I-74 east accompanies the beltway around the west and south sides of Indianapolis.

Exit 17 and Exit 16 to Crawfordsville Road provide the best routes for southbound traffic to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Race day. Crawfordsville Road is part of U.S. 136 west to the town of Clermont.

The original exchange joining I-74/465 was a cloverleaf with a freeway spur east to Crawfordsville Road (U.S. 136) in the town of Speedway. Accelerate 465 road work removed the freeway stub and added a new direct connection to U.S. 136 west from the beltway.
