There are two separate sections for NH 3A. The northern component loops north from U.S. 3 at Franklin along the Pemigewasset River to Hill, Bristol and Newfound Lake and east from West Plymouth alongside NH 25 to Interstate 93 in Plymouth. The south section is a 39.4 mile extension of Massachusetts Route 3A north from Hudson to Litchfield, Manchester, Hooksett, Bow and Concord. The southern NH 3A primarily consists of a local route to both U.S. 3 and the F.E. Everett Turnpike.

NH 3A intersects the south end of the Interstate 89 freeway at Bow Junction. The state route proceeds north from there by a number of car dealerships to the Concord city line.
