Route 49

Measuring 53.80 miles in length, Route 49 travels south across Salem, Cumberland and Cape May Counties in South Jersey. The state route originates at the cloverleaf interchange joining I-295/U.S. 40 with U.S. 130 at Deepwater, east of the Delaware Memorial Bridge.
Heading southwest along the Delaware River, Route 49 leads into Pennsville Township before turning southeast to the city of Salem. Beyond Salem, Route 49 turns more eastward into Quinton Township. Route 49 bee lines southeast across Burden Hill Preserve into Cumberland County at Stow Creek Township.
Route 49 passes south through the borough of Shiloh before angling southeast across Hopewell Township into the city of Bridgeton. Broad Street leads the state road east to Route 77 (Pearl Street) at Downtown. Route 49 shifts onto Commerce Street east to leave the city en route to Millville.
Route 49 follows Main Street east to Route 47 (2nd Street) at Downtown Millville and a parclo interchange with the freeway along Route 55. The remainder of Route 47 east from Cumberland in Maurice River Township to Estell Manor City and Route 50 in Upper Township travels across rural timberland.
Route 49 (Broadway) heads north from Pennsville to meet Interstate 295, U.S. 40 and U.S. 130 at Deepwater. Hook Road connects the state route with U.S. 40 east beyond the separation with I-295 and the New Jersey Turnpike north to New York.

Hook Road parallels I-295 east from Route 49 to CR 551 south. Lippincott Avenue spurs east from the signalized intersection with Broadway to adjacent businesses and a mobile home park.

Route 49 north enters the cloverleaf interchange with Interstate 295 north of Hook Road. I-295 parallels the New Jersey Turnpike north to Bordentown before diverging northward around Trenton.

Route 49 north ends above I-295/U.S. 40 where U.S. 130 begins. U.S. 130 runs between the Delaware River and I-295 north to Penns Grove.

Route 49 extends south from the end of U.S. 130 and cloverleaf interchange with I-295/U.S. 30 to intersect Hook Road. An entrance ramp from Hook Road eastbound joins U.S. 40 east where the New Jersey Turnpike north begins.
