U.S. 1 Alternate bypasses Arbutus between Halethorpe and Morrell Park in southwest Baltimore. The route follows Washington Boulevard and Caton Avenue along a 3.92 mile long course.1 The state maintained portion of U.S. 1 Alternate extends 2.70 miles north from U.S. 1 (Southwestern Boulevard) to the Baltimore city line. Interchanges along the US highway connect with I-95 and I-695 (Baltimore Beltway).

U.S. 1 Alternate North
U.S. 1 Alternate continues Washington Boulevard northward from U.S. 1 (Southwestern Boulevard) through Halethorpe. The first northbound reassurance marker stands within the wye interchange separating the two routes. U.S. 1 northbound traffic passes underneath Washington Boulevard en route to Arbutus. 10/10/04
Advancing 1.16 miles north through the Baltimore suburb of Halethorpe, U.S. 1 Alternate (Washington Boulevard) intersects Ridge and Northeast Avenues. Ridge Avenue extends east from Francis Avenue in Arbutus to Washington Boulevard. Northeast Avenue ties into U.S. 1 Alternate from residential areas to the south. 10/10/04
U.S. 1 Alternate (Washington Boulevard) divided as it nears the intersection with Sulphur Spring Road. The parclo interchange with Interstate 695 (Exit 10) lies just beyond the forthcoming traffic light. 10/10/04
Northbound at Sulphur Spring Road and Old Washington Boulevard. Sulphur Spring Road comprises a surface arterial west to Arbutus and U.S. 1 (Southwestern Boulevard). Old Washington Boulevard loops south from U.S. 1 Alternate to Monumental Road. 10/10/04
Traffic to Interstate 695 east (outer loop) departs U.S. 1 Alternate (Washington Boulevard) northbound at Exit 10. The Baltimore Beltway arcs southeast to Ferndale and the Francis Scott Key Bridge before turning northeast to Dundalk, Essex and Overlea. 10/10/04
A loop ramp carries motorists onto Interstate 695 west (inner loop) ahead of the Baltimore Beltway interchange with Interstate 95 (Exit 11). I-695 continues north from there to Arbutus, Catonsville and Interstate 70. 10/10/04
U.S. 1 Alternate South
U.S. 1 Alternate follows Caton Avenue south U.S. 1 (Wilkens Avenue) in south Baltimore. The US route enters a cloverleaf interchange with I-95, 0.4 miles south of Wilkens Avenue. A loop ramp carries drivers onto Interstate 95 north for Downtown Baltimore and the John F. Kennedy Memorial Highway to Wilmington, Delaware. 10/10/04
Caton Avenue continues past Interstate 95 to Georgetown Road at the Morrell Park neighborhood of Baltimore. 10/10/04
Caton Avenue splits with Patapsco Avenue to connect with Washington Boulevard south at Hammonds Ferry Road. Washington Boulevard continues northeast from Patapsco Avenue into the Morrell Park and Carroll Park communities en route to Downtown Baltimore. 10/10/04
Hammonds Ferry Road stems south from Baltimore to Lansdowne and Patapsco Valley State Park as U.S. 1 Alternate turns southwest along Washington Boulevard to Halethorpe. 10/10/04
