Interstate 395 District of Columbia


The left two lanes carry U.S. 1 from the Potomac River bridge onto 14th Street SW ahead of Independence Avenue and the Washington Monument. The right-hand three lanes turn onto the Southwest Freeway and join the HOV roadway end through East Potomac Park. 06/02/03

U.S. 1 angles northeast and then north via 14th Street, then merges with U.S. 50 at Constitution Avenue NW. The pair continue east to north along the 6th Street NW. 06/22/05

Turning east, the HOV-3 roadway merges in from the left as the Potomac Park off-ramp to Buckeye Drive SW departs. Buckeye Drive connects the off-ramp with Ohio Drive SW as it straddles Washington Channel and the Potomac River south from the Jefferson Memorial area. 06/22/05

Interstate 395 next meets the 12th Street Expressway north to D Street SW, L'Enfant Plaza, and the tunnel under the National Mall to U.S. 1 & 50 (Constitution Avenue NW). 06/22/05

The 12th Street Expressway travels north under the National Mall and meets U.S. 1 & 50 (Constitution Avenue NW), then crosses Pennsylvania Avenue only four blocks southeast of the White House. D Street leads east from U.S. 1 (14th Street SW) to L'Enfant Promenade. 06/22/05

The 12th Street Expressway departs Interstate 395 north from the Francis Case Memorial Bridge. Interests to the Washington Convention Center and the Verizon Center (home of the Washington Wizards NBA franchise) should use 12th Street north. 06/22/05

Maine Avenue passes under Interstate 395 along side Washington Channel between Independence Avenue and M Street. The next eastbound off-ramp connects with the arterial via 9th Street SW at Benjamin Banneker Park. 06/22/05

L'Enfant Plaza passes above Interstate 395 at the Maine Avenue off-ramp. The ramp connects with L'Enfant Plaza north and 9th Street SW at G Street SW. 06/22/05

All hazardous cargo must use Interstate 695 (left lanes) rather than Interstate 395 through the Mall Tunnel. Additionally all vehicles exceeding 13 feet in height are relegated to the left lane of the Center Leg Freeway. Ramps to C Street SW for the U.S. Capitol and the House of Representatives and D Street NW for the United States Senate both depart from I-395 after its split with I-695. 06/22/05

Interstate 695 leads east along the Southeast Freeway to the pre-2009 north end of I-295 (11th Street Bridge). I-395 turns northward along the Center Leg Freeway to U.S. 50 (New York Avenue). 06/22/05

Interstate 695 begins and quickly approaches the South Capitol Street off-ramp to Washington Nationals Park and the Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge across the Anacostia River. I-395 dives below the Southwest Freeway ahead of the C Street off-ramp to Washington Avenue and 1st Street SW north. 06/22/05

Immediately after the split from the Southeast Freeway/Interstate 695, northbound I-395 approaches the left exit to C Street SW for the U.S. Capitol. 06/02/03

Northbound I-395 at the exit for Massachusetts Avenue. I-395 only continues for a short distance longer, ending at U.S. 50 (New York Avenue). An older sign references the unconstructed route of I-95 north toward Baltimore. 06/02/03

I-395 south leads away from U.S. 50 (New York Avenue NW) with four lanes overall lanes. This was the first southbound reassurance shield. It was removed by 2008. 06/01/04
