I-95/495 Capital Beltway - Outer Loop

The next exit along the beltway south joins I-495 with SR 644 (Franconia Road) at Springfield Town Center. References to SR 7900 (now SR 289) were removed as there is no direct access to Franconia Springfield Parkway from the I-95 southbound mainline. Exit 57 B to I-395 (Henry G. Shirley Memorial Highway) leads north to the Pentagon and Arlington. 07/11/05

What was originally a left-hand off-ramp, Exit 57B was reconfigured to depart Interstate 495 east from the right hand side as a new flyover ramp to Interstate 395 north. Access to the Reversible HOV roadway of I-95 south and 395 north now takes the place of Exit 57B. 07/11/05

Interstate 495 spans SR 617 (Backlick Road) ahead of the ramp for I-95 south. Exit 57B follows for I-395 north, though no longer from the left side. 07/11/05

Exit 57A leaves I-495 for I-95 south and SR 644 (Franconia Road). Work associated with the Springfield Interchange also upgraded the exchange with Franconia Road. 07/11/05

Interstate 495, signed here as Exit 57C, maintains six overall lanes through the Springfield Interchange. Interstate 95 north merges with Interstate 495 east via a high flyover ramp from the left. 07/11/05

One mile ahead of Virginia 241 (Telegraph Road) on I-95/495 north. Virginia 241 follows Telegraph Road north from Virginia Secondary 661 (Telegraph Road). 10/02/04

One half mile west of the directional cloverleaf interchange with Virginia 241 (Exits 176A/B). All movements to Virginia 241 (Telegraph Road) and the new Eisenhower Avenue ramp must use the local lanes. 10/02/04

A directional ramp carries drivers to Virginia 241 (Telegraph Road) northbound (Exit 176B) and to Eisenhower Avenue at Hoffman Town Center via the local lanes. 08/01/05

Formerly a directional cloverleaf interchange, construction in association with the Woodrow Wilson Project upgraded the exchange at Exit 177 to include a new flyover ramp from U.S. 1 north to the Beltway west and loop ramps to I-95/495 east. Additionally a new wye interchange connects the beltway west with Mill Road to Eisenhower Avenue. 10/02/04

I-95/495 north at U.S. 1. U.S. 1 south to SR 235 south takes travelers to Mount Vernon while the route northbound also leads to Mount Vernon via SR 400 (Vernon Memorial Highway) south. 08/01/05

I-95/495 (Capital Beltway Outer Loop) north at Exit 177 B for U.S. 1 north to Alexandria and Old Town. 08/01/05

The Capital Beltway east approached the Woodrow Wilson Bridge. Since the state line between Virginia and the District of Columbia lies on the southwest bank of the Potomac River, most of the bridge is in the district and Maryland. There were no signs denoting the District or Maryland state lines. 08/01/05

Interstate 95-495/Capital Beltway use the Woodrow Wilson Bridge to leave Virginia, briefly cross the southernmost tip of the District of Columbia, and enter Maryland. Since the Wilson Bridge is a drawbridge, lane signals are in place to regulate traffic during times when the drawbridge is raised to accommodate larger ships. 08/01/05

The former control tower for the Woodrow Wilson Bridge was situated on the south side of the bridge at the west end of the draw portion. To the south of the original bridge foot print, the Wilson Bridge was built, as the cranes and barges in this photo attest. The new bridge is also a drawbridge, but at 20 feet taller in height, resulting in a 70-foot total clearance. The goal is to reduce openings from 260 to 65 annually. 08/01/05

The new Woodrow Wilson Bridge carries 10 lanes, rather than the six lanes provided by the original bridge. The lanes are now configured into an express/local configuration, so that through traffic uses the left two lanes and local traffic uses the right three lanes. The number one/left lane is reserved for high occupancy vehicles and/or buses, but it may also be used for light rail in the future. 08/01/05
