Albany, GA’s Liberty Expressway

Situated in southwest Georgia is the mid-sized city of Albany. The city is the largest west of Interstate 75 and south of Columbus, and is also home to one of two freeways in far southwest Georgia that are not part of an Interstate highway. The freeway, known as the Liberty Expressway (though not signed as such), carries in part U.S. 19, U.S. 82, Georgia 3, Georgia 300, and Georgia 520 [...]

Pacific Northwest Roadtrip – Day 8 (Olympia to Portland)

We took a full week to drive around and visit friends and family in the Pacific Northwest between Saturday August 26 and Saturday September 2. Among the goals of our trip was to finish clinching the Oregon and Washington Interstate systems, for me to visit Idaho and Montana for the first time, to meet fellow road enthusiasts Matt Strieby and Chris Kalina, and to explore the Columbia River Gorge and [...]

Let’s not forget New York

I had an IM with my friend Jack earlier this evening and he asked when the next New York update would come to the site. I mentioned the I-490 and I-590 updates from last month, but that I had nothing on the imediate agenda with my continued work on the Florida Keys and a brief focus on Washington/Oregon with updates from Matt Strieby. Anyway, I still have a lot of [...]

Roads and Weather

I know that there are many of us road enthusiasts out there who also consider themselves weather junkies. Personally for me, I know several road people that are either meteorologists, studying weather in college, or are about as obsessive about the weather as they are roads. I fall under the category of road junkie who loves weather, though I did study it in college. So what happens when the two [...]

Tampa’s Crosstown Expressway

We decided to head to Picnic Island in south Tampa today, but first I wanted to document the historic west end of U.S. 92 in Tampa today for Dale Sanderson. For a period of time, U.S. 92 traveled west to Tampa from Plant City and ended at U.S. 41 (Nebraska Avenue) via Hillsborough Avenue. The highway was then extended west to its present terminus in St. Petersburg (junction of Florida [...]

New York City area bridges

My mind wanders a lot, especially about roads, and tonight ever so randomly I was thinking of bridges, and bridges in New York City and its metro in particular. So with that stated I thought I would share some images of bridges not covered on AARoads or new coverage not yet added. These images will eventually be added to North East Roads @ AARoads, but for now here's a few [...]

Gulf Coast Road Notes

I spent the better part of the last 8 days traveling around the upper Gulf Coast in southern Alabama and northwest Florida. I drove much of U.S. 98 along the coast in northwest Florida and U.S. 90 parallel to Interstate 10 east of Crestview and again through Tallahassee. Also covered was just about every road in the lower third of Baldwin County, Alabama. The coloured U.S. highway shields in Panama [...]

Rochester, NY update

I decided to take a break from my updates to U.S. 1 and the creation of Florida Keys guide to do a spot update on Upstate New York. So I created new guides for Interstate 590, the eastern half of the Outer Loop freeway at Rochester, New York, on North East Roads @ AARoads. Last year I had the opportunity to visit western New York on two occasions to visit [...]

The Blog

Well it's finally come together, the AARoads Blog. I've always wanted a forum for the site, but finding someone to help us set it up, let alone trying to figure it out ourselves, has been tedious at best, so we gave up on the concept. A few months ago Justin posed the idea of instead creating a blog, similar to the ones he had at tropicalturnpikes.com and bayciti.net. Both Andy [...]

I-95 traffic outruns money for construction (Delaware)

I cull through the Delaware News Journal's online website almost every day looking for road related stories for the website and for my personal interest in my former state. One was posted today about Interstate 95 and its growing congestion and lack of money to upgrade the ailing interchange with Delaware 1 and the bottleneck at the Interstate 295 split. http://www.delawareonline.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060709/NEWS/60709005/1006 The article just says the same thing that is [...]
