Federal funds flow through state DOTs and consultants hired by local sponsors are terrible at following federal and state requirements half the time, if not more often.  Therefore, yes, not all decisions can be left up to locals when federal funds are involved.

For some reason, the TX 288 shield is an old reused upside-down US 67 shield. What's interesting to me is that this sign is located about 300 miles away from US 67.

This is why we tend to use the backs of the signs whenever we reuse signs over here in Québec.

Quote from: Bitmapped on June 11, 2025, 10:23:06 PMThe West Virginia constitution has a limitation on municipal property tax rates, just as it does for counties. Cities have a couple other sources of taxation available to them (B&O and/or sales taxes) but they are relatively insignificant for smaller towns.

Your suggestion that bonds don't require new taxes is just plain wrong.

West Virginia property tax rates (.55%) are ridiculously low. The personal property tax is also .55%; sales and income tax are roughly equivalent to neighboring states. If the governor is going to push more fiscal responsibility over to the counties, which IMHO he should, the counties need to be able to take it to the voters for funding. If voters see the funds are used under local direction for local projects they more than likely will pass the ballot measure. There is NO WAY the state of WV should be deciding on what sidewalks are built in Lewisburg. These are local decisions.

I don't think there is a limit on the local sales tax, so maybe his play is here?

Columbus has an existing bond levy which was renewed at the current rate by the voters. Hmmm...

The IDOT D8 construction season summary states that replacing the 55/70 bridges over Beltline Rd require full closures, done one direction at a time. Makes sense to do the other direction after July 4th weekend.

I haven't seen the exact date for the WB/SB closure but I can believe July 11

July 11 is the date I've seen.  They've put a lot of work into 55 over the last year or so.

I was gonna change back after Pride Month, but 65x65 is a very small size, and even the reduced size crop of my profile pic accounts for the old 80x80 limit.

Quote from: NJRoadfan on July 06, 2025, 09:56:43 PMIts been a long time since I was on the Thruway in Rockland County. Who thought it was a good idea to install ramp meters on a freeway-freeway ramp?  :pan:

They do that in California too. And its purpose is the same as everywhere else: to meter the flow of traffic onto the highway. What location was this ?

US-460 west of Petersburg has them, in the low 300s and high 200s. Street View shows they have been there since at least 2021, but not before 2013.

It would be nice if they were more consistently posted (like throughout the whole state, at least where they are divided highways), but seeing some rather than none is nice.

It's dependent on what each district prefers I'm guessing. Hampton Roads, for example, only posts them on interstate highways. Even state route and US route freeways, such as US-58, VA-164, etc. lack them along with no exit numbers.

VA-168 and US-17 have mile markers posted from I-64 to the NC state line, and VA-168 has exit numbers, but those are both maintained and operated by the city of Chesapeake.

Quote from: TheOneKEA on July 06, 2025, 04:40:52 PMI will be interested to see if there are any calls for some of the busier at-grade intersections on the loooooooong stretch of US 11/15 south of Selinsgrove to be grade-separated once the CSVT is complete.
Building interchanges might be tricky space-wise (and environmental-wise) for many of the intersections, since 11/15 runs so close to the river most of the way.  If there ever is a call for more grade-separations, it might be more practical to relocate the highway to new r/w further inland, to the west.  That could also help reduce possible flooding issues.

Quote from: Thing 342 on July 06, 2025, 06:42:16 PMDrove US-58 through Mecklenburg County today and noticed that it now has posted mile makers every half mile, added sometime between 2023 and February 2025. Since VA doesn't usually post mileposts on US routes, does anyone know if this is just a one-off?

I have not seen any new mile markers on US routes in central and northern Virginia...
