Strangely enough, Google Maps lists the Gordie Howe Bridge as the "Goodies Howe Bridge": https://www.google.com/maps/@42.2892425,-83.1036651,1464m/data=!3m1!1e3?entry=ttu. That makes as much sense as listing a portion of Interstate 295 in Fayetteville, NC as Garrison Dr.

Don't know. Canadian and US border agencies are now onsite at the work zone, since it is now an active border crossing

Whether workers require a passport (book/card) I don't know. Wouldn't shock me, tho. But if you stay on "your" side of the boundry line I wouldn't think a passport required, but I simply don't have the required knowledge to comment intelligently

Wouldn't it be more logical to treat it like the Peace Arch or the Haskell Free Library and Opera House?  As in, you can cross as much as you need within the work zone no questions asked, but must exit on the same side you entered.

This article I found states:

As the bridge is technically now an international crossing, Canada Border Services Agency and United States Customs and Border Protection officials are now on the ground on site, clearing workers to do their jobs.

That would seem to suggest passports, but perhaps something less formal might be allowed as well.

As this is Michigan and Ontario, many of these workers probably just have enhanced driver's licenses, typically used for a border crossing there anyway.

Agreed.  Nobody needs a passport to use the Haskell Free Library and Opera House or the Peace Arch Park.  Why should one (or otherwise accepted travel document) be required here?  It's really overkill, especially given that the examples I cited are open to the public, while the construction zone isn't.

A decade or so ago I was talking with a USCustoms guy who flat out told me that had the 2001-09-11 thing not happened, Canada and the USA were on track to eliminate the mutual border checkpoints between them by sometime in 2004 and creating a Schengen-style customs union.  When you think about it, keeping an eye on the relatively small number of continental entry ports is a LOT easier, less expensive, with fewer hassles and overall more efficient than monitoring that line that is artificially drawn though some of the most remote land on the planet.

Why? I-94 and I-69 both end at the border, I-96 would have to follow I-75 which doesn't end at the border there making signing I-96 up to the Gordie Howe Bridge pointless.
