After talking with Alex in Chat, i decided to start up this thread (feel free to make it independent) for us actual collectors to post our wish lists and hopefully, add to our collections without adding to ebay's coffers....
My wishlists:
Interstate (all state-named): Mississippi. North Carolina, Florida, Louisiana, Maryland, Washington, Oregon, Utah, Indiana, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Rhode Island Hawaii, Delaware, District of Columbia,
US (state named) New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Maryland, District of Columbia, Georgia, Mew Mexico, W. Virginia, New York, North Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, California, Washington, Oregon, Oklahoma, North Dakota, Nebraska, South Dakota, Utah
State Route: Delaware, Mississippi, Rhode Island, Alaska, Hawaii, Washington, Kentucky, District of Columbia
Hope somebody out there can help me with a couple of these....
Thanks!
So just post what we would like here? OKAY!
For my wishlist I would really love a US 9W sign from NY and an I-787 (NY) sign (state name prefered, but its okay if its not). Also, if you have a New York Thruway or an I-476 sign, that would be great.
Thanks and nice idea!
I'm interested in starting a collection, but I have no clue where to begin. Obviously I can't trade, does anyone have signs for sale?
I only have Canadian signs and I'm not willing to share them. :-D
well, yes and no.
the whole idea behind this thread was that if any of us had surplus signs to sell, and a fellow signgeek was in the market for said same, that we could email each other privately and reach a deal without involving eBay, PayPal , and their fees....
if you are a seller, eBay can be a great thing....if you are a buyer, not so good...
Anyone selling any NJ Road signs?
well true. as long as I get an I-787 or a nice old US 9W sign, i don't care where i get it :-D
Also, if anyone has an I-93 (state named prefered) sign from New Hampshire or an I-95 or I-295 (state named) from Maine, that would be awesome :colorful:. Also, anyone have any New Hampshire route shields to sell? If you can, I would like the sign to be a bit weathered, cause thats how I like signs ;-)
thanks!!! :spin:

You'll pay a pretty penny to get a state-named shield for Interstate 93 in NH. You can pretty much assume that of any state that has gone the neutered route for several decades.
Well, I can save  . Well Maine won't be to bad since they still install state named shields
Best thing to do for a I-93 NH shield is to have a sign company manufacture one to authentic specs. Trying to find one otherwise will be very difficult and probably result in $150 or more in costs.
$150!!!!!!!!!! :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: Well theres still that I-787 and US 9W sign :D

Interstate 787 likely would go for similar rates, considering the rarity of state-named shields in the Empire State. U.S. 9W would be cheaper because its just a plain U.S. highway shield. Where to find one for sale or trade is your next move. :spin:
well there always a non-state named sign. Finding one is gonna be really tough. Ebay is one place, but the seller usually knows nothing about the sign and puts a new shield for like $300. NOT kidding. Hopefully a member here can help me out :D. At the most part I'd like a I-787 or a US 9W, but I'd also like any NH shield or an I-476 sign :colorful:
Go through Jake (https://www.aaroads.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=36) for authentic custom signs. He crafted me an Interstate 4 Florida 18x18" shield and a embossed U.S. 122 Delaware cutout that look great.

Only problem with Maine is they wont pass signs to collectors any longer.
The story i got last fall from the guy in the Maine sign shop was that a new version Maine Turnpike sign got on ebay...and a Turnpike commissioner saw it and had both him and the Tpke Sign Shop guy on his carpet demanding to know what happened....the Tpke guy admitted collectors came up to poke through his scrap piles for signs and that might be how one got away....both guys were told in NO uncertain terms that 'there will be no more of that!"...the guy politely declined my offers of trade (new blanks for used shields, or pay MDOT to make the signs for me on my blanks)
Right now, Maine, Rhody and New Hampshire are essentially closed to sign collectors (although you can order new signs from the NH State Prison sign shop....i ordered two and they are nice) Vermont is OK as long as you dont go gonzo on them by grabbing hundreds or put your takings on eBay...Mass and Connecticut depends upon where you go...some are friendly to us, others are not. Dont know about NY, i pretty much got what i need...NJ i lucked out but their stuff is fairly recent...but i wouldnt count on it for long. PA, i dont know, but the reports i have are not hopeful
MY NH I-93 cost me a lot...it was Joehler's last NH in more ways than one...and it was worth it to me....

good luck to you
I might go for an I-83 sign thats on eBay. Its not state named or anything, but its kinda cool, has the 3M reflective sheeting  and on the back, I believe it has the Maryland Dept. of Transportation sticker.
I'd also like to see if anyone has any New York route markers (US, interstate, and state markers).
thanks!
If anyone wants inexpensive state signs, they are out there...you just have to take the time to hunt for them...Jake (agentsteele) snagged a cutout Oregon US 30 for an absurdly low price because the sign was badly mis-classified...
i want a I-35 sign
and a Trans-Canada 1 sign
So what's the best way to get ahold of a state highway shield if you don't care if it's used or not? I'd really like to have a 2006-series Oklahoma shield (the meatcleaver), but of course I doubt they've done anything that would warrant taking down any signs since 2006. Would it be better to contact ODOT, or see about ordering a shield from a contractor? Are there any good contractors you know of that would be willing to make a state highway shield, potentially for a state a long, long way away? Or would Jake be the best bet, or is he best off for people wanting really bizarre stuff like 16x16 Missouri I-25 signs?
I was kinda named after a street in Del City, OK near my old house, so for my birthday one year I asked for a Scott Street blade sign. The Del City streets department politely informed my mom that they didn't do orders from the public and that they didn't have any scrapped that they could give me.
I "rescued" (if you want to call it that) three signs from possible scrap. Two of them were the old secondary route signs in Florida and the third was an early generation CR shield which was getting replaced. But I really do want the kodachrome U.S. shields of Florida.
theres a I-20 texas sign on ebay for $40.00 i would get it but i have no money :(
i wish i had like $100.00
Do states still put their names on interstate shields anymore?
Its a toss up, these states use the state name within new shields:
CA, NV, AZ, NM, CO, WY, OK, ND, IA, MO, AR, AL, SC, WV
These states sometimes put the state name in their shields, sometimes neuter them:
GA, KS, KY, NJ, CT
The rest basically neuter all assemblies.
Some do. I know California, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma do.
EDIT: I guess aaroads beat me to the punch :ded:
ive seen some signs that say Texas only on access roads though
Who just called CT a sometimes on the neutering? CT NEVER NEUTERS!
The only neutered CT I-shields i ever saw were those used in and around construction zones...made by private contractors.
all STC-issued I-shields are still proudly emblazoned with 'CONNECTICUT'
Here's a neutering that pisses me off - COUNTY SHIELDS in NJ. Those should be inviolate!
Neutered shields for Connecticut:
http://www.northeastroads.com/connecticut050/i-084_eb_exit_008_01.jpg (http://www.northeastroads.com/connecticut050/i-084_eb_exit_008_01.jpg)

Perhaps they stopped using new neutered shield assemblies, much in the way Colorado and Alabama (recently) have.
I've looked on ebay but can find any state route signs from Ohio. I actually have an OH-151 sign, but I would love an OH-7 sign. I grew up in Steubenville which 7 goes through. In that same way, I would love a US 22 sign. Others I would like are NC-12, I-64, I-68, I-70.
Never seen any of those on ebay. Anyone have any of these?
Here is a list of more signs that I could use:
-A Massachusetts Turnpike shield
-A New Jersey Turnpike shield
-Any New Hampshire shield
-A US 1 Maine shield
-A US 201 Maine shield
-Any Rhode Island shield
-A US 1 Rhode Island shield
-I'd also like to get one of those MA green signs like these: http://picasaweb.google.com/Iansignal/MassachusettsTrafficSignalsAndRoadSigns#5322895128721592370 (http://picasaweb.google.com/Iansignal/MassachusettsTrafficSignalsAndRoadSigns#5322895128721592370)
-An I-87 shield
-A US 9W shield
-Any interstate shield from DC
-An I-97 shield
-A US 301 shield
-Any Connecticut route shield
-A Merritt Parkway shield
-A CT state named interstate shield
-Any VT interstate or state highway shield
EDIT: added a few more shields to the list
Thats it for now! Im such a sign freak

You did miss an old embossed Ohio 17 on ebay that i stole for only 90....therwe is an embossed Ohio 96 up now, but the opening bid is $500 (no takers so far)
Keep looking for square Ohios on eBay...they are not common, but aside from one exception, can usually be had fairly cheaply

I'd also like to see if anyone has any New York route markers (US, interstate, and state markers).
I have a steel NY 17 marker. It's not really for sale, but I might part with it for the right price.
Any NY experts have any idea how old it is? I've never even been to NY.

I dont think it is too old. If it were old enough, it would have NY written on the top. That is a NICE sign BTW. I'd like to make a deal if you are gonna part with it ;-).
^^^Nice ones! Look to be in good shape too!

I know that you want a sign that was posted in the field, but Garden State Highway Products (http://www.gardenstatehwy.com/) supplies signs for NJ roads, and you can at least buy a mint shield for $50. I bought a Garden State Parkway trailblazer from them last year (which looks great), and they likely sell NJ Turnpike trailblazers too. Contact Joe Mac at their web site if you are interested.
Yea, I've ordered from them before. I have a 24"x24" New York Thruway shield from them. I also got a tour of the place :-P!! Though I still would like a used Thruway shield :sombrero:.
Oh yes, you did mention that before :banghead:
A US 97 shield from CA would be nice to have.
I would like an older PSH 1 shield or a Washington US 99 shield.
Anyone know where I could may be get a Quebec autoroute shield? Those shields look really neat.

My original wishlist: remove Washington from Interstate, US and State shields, as well as Louisiana from the Interstates....a couple of recent pickups, plus two confirmed acquisitions when i return from my vacation

My wish list is for a 30's-style cut-out for US 71 plus AR 45 or 68... possibly a MO 13 or 37. Also a 50's cut-out of an AR or MO shield.
I have a 4 ft long yellow/black hazard (stripe) sign I'm willing to sell if anyone is interested.
Anyone have an NC-12 they'd like to sell? The only state shields I have are an older, narrow Oh-151 and a really beat-up I-95 (no state name).

Havent forgot the Ohio shields guys....finally going next week to visit....
ctsignguy,
What kind of Ohio shields do you plan to get? I'd like to be part of that list :sombrero:
Thanks!

OK, for those who wanted Ohio shields, good news and bad news....
First the bad news.....when i did go visit last week, they didnt have but a few in stock (and i doubted any of you would have wanted a plastic tube Ohio shield from a construction zone....) So, i didnt get any
The good news is, the guy told me to come back towards the end of September, early October when they are finishing up some projects, and they should have quite a few on hand then....
SO....there may not be much choice in numbers, but hey, considering that ODOT is permanently closed to sign collectors, we'll take what we can get....
QuoteThe only neutered CT I-shields i ever saw were those used in and around construction zones...made by private contractors.

Yes... I'm sure these permanent shields were also made and placed by contractors on the Route 20/I-91 connection. Not only neutured, but a hideous extra dark shade of blue, and terribly uncentered "91"
I have noticed these same shields on a few overhead BGS's in the area as well, like on I-291 WB approaching the I-91 Interchange, must have been the same contractor.
Sorry for the blurry. It's 7 am on a saturday moring and I just buzzed out and took this cuz I knew it was there. I wasn't circling around again for another attempt

I am certain of that, but the AR-10 cutout is engaged in important work, upholding a place of honor along Cutout Alley (ask Jake, aka Agentsteel53)
I won't claim to be a big sign collector, but I've bid on a 1970s demountable button-copy 8" letter on eBay.
I'd love to get my hands on shields for M-28, M-35, US 41, maybe I-75. Cutouts preferred, but modern ones wouldn't be turned down. I think they'd be good wall art for a future office area in my apartment.
There are a few specific things I'd like to get a hand on:
Pennsylvania and Ohio state named I-shields. Preferably I-80, I-76, I-71 and these would be toughies I-80S, I-81E! Neutered shield would be OK as well.
I-83 shields including state named for MD and PA. An I-83 Business from York, PA would be highly desirable.
US highways: 11, 15, 30, 522, 220
PA routes: 42, 44, 54, 487 and a tough one 9! (old NE ext.)
Ohio: 8, 43, 59, 91, 235

What's funny is I have an M-35 up on my wall. Of all the cutouts to wonder about, that's probably the easiest to find. I agree that NJ/DE shields are unusually hard to come by, maybe because most people just don't care about the circles and so they never find their way into collectors' hands.

I saw the ME 4A shield. I don't think I am going to take it, since Joehler isn't the best seller out there. With the NYS Thruway, I already have one custom made.
I got a meat cleaver from Joehler on eBay once, and he seemed to be a decent seller. 'Course if you have a moral objection to his shield procurement methods, then obviously that would cloud things a bit.

If you're insinuating what I think you are, I'd be more worried about legal implications than moral objection.
nope, nothing like that. he gets them from highway departments, scrapyards, etc - on occasion getting the fraggin' wagon out on location to officially retire a sign.

If he acquires them legally, then I see absolutely no moral problems with it.
I need to go to Missouri and get my signs. I have a custom made Arkansas I-49 shield, a bunch of US routes, and several state shields. All modern signs except for my infamous US 59 embossed cutout rustbucket.

That is how i get a few of my signs as well....just gotta know who you can deal with....and not mess with those whom you can't

It is not that he is a bad seller, it is just that he sells signs for a high price. He sold me a plain ME 4 shield for $55. He also sometimes writes stuff on the back of his signs, which isn't all bad, I assume. He is a good source for signs that can be tough to find.

There used to be a decent flea market where Joplin & Webb City meet that would have signs, but the place closed a few years ago. I picked up a rectangle TT ( --TT--> ) along US 63 a few years back... just south of the MO line IIRC.
I picked up a steel black/yellow STOP (round font) in Lowell about 1o years ago, but sacrificed it to the e-bay after I got a square font b/y STOP. I also once found a yellow diamond steel "Road Closed" sign.
I also have a couple signs that may predate MUTCD: one is a rectangle w/ square fonts
Boulevard
STOP.
The other is a rectangle:

Business
District
None are for sale at this time, but if I think about it, maybe I'll post a couple pics.

I can make one for 99 bucks. You may be able to have a standard NY state contractor make a modern shield cheaper, as my price is for a fully customized route marker, while theirs would be part of a batch run of near-identical shields.
I do not know who the standard contractors are for NY state - your best bet may be to look on the back of the sign for a manufacturing sticker. Here in CA, Safeway Sign identifies their product.

there was one on eBay just now; did you acquire it? I also know some people who have the occasional modern beehive for sale.
Are you talking about the UT-184A (now UT-284) sign? So far, that's the only one on Ebay that's up for sale, and yet it's $75. Are these people you know on Ebay, AgentSteel?

I thought that one sold, and the US-30S by the same seller did not - unless we're referring to different ones. Can you link me to the 184A?
The people I'm thinking of are generally not on eBay. Trying to remember if they have any beehives... I'll have to inquire. Want me to?
Yea, sure. Let me know what route numbers they do have, and what prices they have. I'd especially like to see about if they have any old UT-4 (temporary I-70), UT-1 (temp. I-15), UT-15 (now UT-9), or UT-8 beehive signs. Thanks in advance.

-A state route shield of any style from all 50 states (except for ME, VT, MA, PA, CA, and AL)
-A Quebec Autoroute shield
-Any of New York State's parkway shields
-A green Maryland business US route shield
-A PennDOT town/city/county/etc. line sign
-A PennDOT little white quadrant route sign
-An NYSDOT reference marker (doesn't matter which style)
-A New Jersey Turnpike shield
-A Garden State Parkway shield
-An Atlantic City Expressway shield
-A Pennsylvania Turnpike shield (either an old 16" flat or embossed shield or a more modern distance trailblazer)
-An NYSDOT speed limit sign (ex: a STATE SPEED LIMIT 55 sign)
Any help appreciated!
Ian
I'm not big into them but I would like a genuine I-80 from Pennsylvania, preferably from the timeframe 1969-70 when the highway was completed.
A bonus would be the "Keystone Shortway" banner which was blue with white lettering to match the interstate signage and the same size as the banner or arrow.

Talk to Jake/Agentsteel. He could probably make all you want ( he has connections to a sign company) ;)
I've contemplated having some made. (I've got a big catalog from Rice Signs). Although I think ones that have actually been mounted on the road, even if they're beat up are a lot better. Because they have nostalgia to them.

I definitely agree having road-used signs is better although in my area (Long Island), they seem to be harder to come by. But I did finally get my first two road-used shields recently - a NY 5 from upstate and a I-95 from RI. The others I have (I-495, NY 27, NY 112, Suffolk CR 80, Southern State Pkwy.) were fabricated from a variety of places.
Rice Signs is a good one for making standard shields of modern specs. If you need anything older, I have the specs and can have one made.
Thanks I'll keep that in mind.

the shield shape is also different. it's a late 20s sign - the company (SG Adams from St. Louis) happened to use round fonts. It's not quite the same as the FHWA font set - it's almost halfway between round and block fonts.

I'm looking at having a US 15 sign made (never done this before), and found this website (http://store.trafficsignstore.com/merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=trafficsignstore&Product_Code=M1-4-24EG&Category_Code=) with one that can be made for $46.50 (24"x24", Type 1 sheeting). What do you guys think: is it a good price, and are they reputable?
it's a good price, but their shield shape seems off.
might just be their icons, though.

Thanks! I went there once before (found them on this forum), and I couldn't find it. Now all I need is a spare $50, but they don't accept PayPal. :-(
anyone interested in a Maryland US 40 fully embossed sign? I'm running off a batch. $99 each.

What shield specs are these? I found it on RiceSigns...

Seemed like normal '70 specs to me, but unless I'm using the wrong specs, it seems a bit different:

those are the "don't buy from Rice Signs" specs :-D
So, it's not based on any actual specs at all? I did notice they're using Series C when the '70 shield would have specifically called for Series D numerals to be used.
They want $150 for it.
the shape is badly wrong; somehow, it is worse-looking than 1970 spec. Did not think that was possible.
$150 is ridiculous. I can make you a much nicer sign for less, and I am running off in small quantities.
It was just a random entry I found on their site, I wonder why it was even there if it's not based on any federal standards and wouldn't be used for any actual guide sign purposes.

It may be for sale, considering all the other fugly signs out there

ch-ching!
Its part of their "Special series", just random signs meant for the collectors market. Most of which can be found on their main pages for half of the "special series" price.

As in, whoever buys these inaccurate abominations is "special". ;)
Wish those items didn't clog up eBay.
As far as I can tell, that's the only inaccurate one.
I might get that shield on eBay if I can find the same one (or something similar) for less.
I remade the shield using Series D numerals, though, since I think that would make it look better:

No, the US-99 shield in blue and gold.
However, if you DO have the Wisconsin yellow and black shield available for sale, I'll probably get that.

would be more expensive. the 99 is just on a standard US blank, of which I have a stack of 60 sitting at home...

My UPDATED (8/28/11) wishlists:
Interstate (all state-named): North Carolina, Hawaii, Delaware, District of Columbia, Mississippi
US (state named) Alabama, North Carolina, New Jersey, Virginia
State Route: District of Columbia 295
I-95 Circle Tour: North Carolina, Virginia, DC, Delaware, New Jersey, New York, Massachusetts, New Hampshire
Does anyone have any California-style US route shields that are ready for sale? I'm looking for a standard US-101 shield.
Is that one of the pre-'57 specs? The state name looks largely than usual, and I recall seeing a similar I-90 shield in Washington that had the same look to it.
i think Jake had it pegged as a 57-spec shield done as a blank..the large '90' was an afterthought when larger numbers were put in the regs
What a cool thread! A perfect place to find items for my man cave, which already has a few signs.
I'm really interested in some more California green spades. Specifically, I'm looking for CA-55 and CA-91 (which I hate driving on) to round out my collection fo OC state freeways.
I'd be interested in an I-405 as well, if anybody has one.
Was wondering if anyone had any of these up for grabs...
-Philadelphia hexagonal street blade sign
-Moose crossing (text or graphic, doesn't matter)
-Speed limit 70 or 75.
Thanks!
My wall is full, so new arrivals mean the old signs have to drop out. I'm ready to unload a couple but before I go the eBay route, maybe you have something that would interest me. (Remember to copy/paste the links into your browser to get them to work)

(https://www.aaroads.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.alpsroads.net%2Froads%2Ftx%2Fmisc%2Fc104.jpg&hash=7778ed46bb6198a33207bde80016a5973a0e5ae0) - Texas CR shield from the last remaining days when 6" letters were used. I have another CR shield from Iowa and don't feel I need two. Just about new condition.
I also have a NORTH and right/left arrow that would go with a county shield, which I can use to sweeten the pot a bit. I'd consider trading all 4 signs for one much more desirable one, or trade 1 for 1 with some signs you're looking to get rid of too. As a gauge, I can probably get about $100-$150 for all four from eBay, based on what I paid and what I see similar selling for. Let me know - private message please! webmaster@alpsroads.net
EDIT: Might consider these two dudes: (https://www.aaroads.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.alpsroads.net%2Froads%2Fwy%2Fi-80%2Fwy.jpg&hash=94088835ea4c4325e358fbcfd4d7af4cf01a2150) (https://www.aaroads.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.alpsroads.net%2Froads%2Fmi%2Fi-75%2Fwide.jpg&hash=ff4f71e7b097b3b5368bfd56fd91292c54091cd6) - I-75 is a county job from Michigan, quite good condition. I-80 is good except the mounting holes have gotten a bit wider than originally drilled. The I-80 is a lightweight aluminum shield, the other signs are all of average aluminum weight. So that's six whole signs I might be willing to trade part or all of... if The Price Is Right (TM).

correct. I believe it is a 30x25. What size are the numbers? maybe even larger than the 12" which would normally go on a 70 spec shield.
county issue. letters are 12" though. i'm more looking for a trade here, since ebay can always sell

10 years ago it would have been $50 to cover the cost of the scrap metal and the shipping.
I've got five green California cutout state route markers for sale.
route 1, 28x25"
route 14, 24x25"
route 34, 24x25"
route 170, 28x25"
another route 170, 28x25"
yes, the route 1 is for some reason a wider shield. it's also slightly older, made with 1970s EG sheeting that is yellow instead of pure white. the others are all 2000-2005 or so vintage. all are in excellent condition but clearly used.
asking $75+s/h for the 1, and $45+s/h for the others. post, send a message, or email me at jake@aaroads.com if you are interested.

Currently in possession of two Louisiana shields. One is LA 524, an old alignment of US 165, and the other is LA 953, a road that has since been decommissioned as a state highway. The LA 524 one is green-and-white, and in really good condition, and the LA 953 is a black-and-white sign that has a giant warp in it from laying on the side of the highway (was literally pulled up along with the post and thrown onto the abandoned railroad bed below).
Looking to trade! Trying to get a pretty good variety, and I have a few Arkansas state Interstate shields and Mississippi shields coming my way.

I want to keep some of these signs, but for the right amount of money I'd sell any of them besides the I-49 and the US 59. I would have to go pick up the signs, but if I had several offers on the table I could make a quick trip up there and get them. PM me if you're interested and make me an offer.

There used to be a decent flea market where Joplin & Webb City meet that would have signs, but the place closed a few years ago. I picked up a rectangle TT ( --TT--> ) along US 63 a few years back... just south of the MO line IIRC.
I got my MO 59 sign from a junkyard on AR 59 about 1/4 mile south of the Missouri line.
As some of you know, i have been undergoing chemo after removal of a tumor this past spring. I have decided to sell off a few of my signs....the current 'for sale' signs are here:
http://s166.photobucket.com/albums/u102/ctsignguy/Signs%20for%20Sale%20or%20Trade/
Not asking for an arm or a leg, a pound of flesh or your first-born, or your first round pick in next years NFL draft....
Only crevat....the I-93 is sold...everything else is open
I'd love the I-15 (CA) and TX FM 3313 signs but you're all so far :(
If I weren't in such a budget pinch myself I'd definitely buy that US 60 and/or I-295.
I mean, I'd love all of the first four and possibly others, but how does this work? Make an offer, or do you have an idea for each one of what you'd like?
i pretty much know my asking prices...but as i have said elsewhere, i am not interested in making a pile of money as much as just moving some of these guys to new homes...so you may find them quite reasonable
EDIT: If there is something you truly want, make an offer....you might be surprised!
Anyone interested I have: I-81 (VA), I-95 (NC), US 71 (MO), I-29 MM 53.5 (MO), TN 111, KY 55, US 30 (PA), for sale

I think I'm going to Missouri to get my signs in the next few months and I'll probably sell most of them. Most of them are US highway shields, many from Kansas but I do have a few others like a steel NY 17 shield and a green LA state highway shield (I think it's LA 25 but I can't remember for sure.) When I get them I'll post pictures here and take offers.

Here's a sample. Some of them are not for sale (especially the rusty US 59 cutout and the custom made Arkansas I-49 shield) but I'd part with most of them for the right price.

Yes, LA. I also have a 2di US 190 from LA that I might sell. The 51 is definitely for sale.
I sense some competition.

Do you have a couple examples?
Note: you will have to post a link.
I saw an I-173 sign (likely the erroneous one in New Jersey for NJ-173) that went for almost $130. I didn't think it would end up going for that much, but I guess errors make something more valuable, right?

might be interested in the 190. Depends on what it looks like and what my money looks like at that time.
I have a few signs I have up for grabs. I didn't really want to sell these, but I'd like to get some new stuff for my collection, so I'm selling these. The prices listed does not include shipping. If you're interested, feel free to private message me

-US 46 shield from New Jersey. It was never used in the field, but it intended to be, as evidence to the "NJDOT" marking on the bottom right corner. Hoping for $25 for it.
-Vermont 12 shield. A little scratched up, but still a cool old sign nonetheless. Looking for $25 for it.
-"TOWN SPEED LIMIT 30" sign from the town of Islip, NY. Not sure how old it is, but it certainly is neat! Looking for $15 for it.
-PennDOT "WEIGHT LIMIT 33 TONS" sign. Manufactured in 1989 according to the markings on the bottom. Looking for $15 for it.
-Two Ontario guardrail markers, one with high reflective "honeycomb" sheeting. $5 each.
Only thing I may be interested in getting rid of at this time is a logo sign for Super 8

State DOTs should sell old signs that are intact enough for someone to collect. It could be a (slight) additional income source, too.

Well, on the surface it SEEMS like a good idea...until you realize how few sign collectors there really are out there. I was talking to a sign shop guy and floated the idea by him (He is aware of AARoads plus a few other forums the sign guys like me hang around in). His comment was it might be good for a short while, but after you sold signs to the signgeeks, who is left for all those signs? (I recall a chap who did that with a bevvy of old GA signs on the 'Bay a few years back.......i dont think he moved too many of them).
Myself, i dont think the actual sign collectors number more than a few hundred at most....

A fairly substantial concern to selling signs would be vandals putting up false signs, potentially creating a dangerous situation. Given that vandals and those with nothing else to do in search of a quick laugh probably outnumber legitimate sign collectors, its safe to say that DOTs and municipalities would be very concerned with signs falling into the "wrong" hands.
Does anyone know where I can find a used US 99 from Washington or a used US 80 sign from Arizona? I would prefer shields that have actually been posted on the highways at one point, but wouldn't complain about replicas.

I have a 36 inch STOP with reflectors for sale. I'd like to get $140 for it (plus shipping). If no takers, I'll throw it up on ebay. I hate to part with it, but money is a little tight.
Though I do not have signs for sale or trade, would someone be interested in two 8" glass lenses (for traffic signals) manufactured by Marbelite?
For those that collect traffic signals, each one is a "teardrop" lens, and I have amber and green. I could sell each for one at least $20. I am negotiable, though. Below, are two pictures of each lens. Each one has its own gasket.

I have a couple 6x6 inch Stop signs and three 6 1/4 x 5 inch Chevron signs to sell. I'm asking $5 each plus $2 shipping. All are aluminum and have the honeycomb prismatic sheeting.
I don't feel like messing with e-bay for these since I'd probably have to charge $8-10 starting just to cover their fees.

If you're going to the Wichita Road Meet, I can hand deliver and save you postage :)
I was inspired to post a few signs that have been sitting around, that I could stand to get rid of, since I'd like to get more but I don't have the wall space. Prices do not include shipping, since I see many of you (or drive by your area) throughout the course of the year. Shipping in the past has been around $10 for similar signs.
www.alpsroads.net/roads/fl/i-275/275.jpg - 2-digit "error" for a 3-digit route, state not specified but similar to those I've seen in Florida. Six mounting holes, 3 top 3 bottom. High-intensity sheeting, condition as shown (scratches/scuffs honestly more visible in that photo than in real life, as I look at the shield). $50
www.alpsroads.net/roads/tx/misc/c104.jpg - A style no longer used by the county. I believe it's because of the small digits, only 8 inches. Yellow letters are on a black background before being applied to the blue sheeting. Light scratches as shown. $45
County shield (gold legend/blue background) NORTH and turn arrow signs - No photo, these do not quite match the CR 104 (lighter blue). NORTH does not have a larger initial first letter. Arrow is either left or right (obviously can be flipped 180). Each has two mounting holes with light wear, more moderate wear around the border. Arrow has two small gouges, one near either hole. NORTH has one larger gouge by the right border (down to metal) and between NO. $13 each, $25 pair.
www.alpsroads.net/roads/or/old_30/us.jpg _or_ (NOT AND) a Kentucky US 41 - I have two state-name US shields, and I really don't need both. The US 41 shield is a paler whitish gray (not the yellowish of the 30), and the black legend is faded. No obvious peeling like on the 30, though some scuffing of the "4". Dark marks around the two mounting holes, a possible rust discoloration or two around the right edge. $75 for either, your choice.
www.alpsroads.net/roads/wy/i-80/wy.jpg - Similar condition to the I-275, mounting holes around the edge instead of in two rows. Pretty much exactly as you see here. $65
If you're interested and you want a photo of the ones I don't have, let me know. Would rather give to y'all rather than post on e-Bay. Hey, they make great Christmas presents, too!

Yeah, signs are very important for human life. Also there are lots of online shop that offer a wide range of safety signs. You can go through and find out appropriate signs for your needs. But I'm from AU.

Thanks for the folks who helped me when I asked about signs - I don't have a ton of extra money right now seeing as I am moving in a week, but just in case: is anyone in possession of any or all of the following signs: PA 51, OH 682, US 33, US 19, I-579 (preferably with Pennsylvania on the shield), I-279, or I-376?

Forgive my ignorance...but what does the law say about buying, selling, or even possessing such signs? I've got this I-75 sign hanging in my garage. A buddy of mine got it for me (stole it?) for my birthday in November of 1980 prior to the highway's opening in Sarasota County.
It's not like I really want to sell it; I'm just curious what the legalities are. Obviously, the statute of limitations ran out a long time ago.

Hello all. First-time poster but a long-time reader of this forum; I've been fascinated by maps and roads (especially road signs) for as long as I can remember.
I hope this is okay to post. I wanted to let everyone know about some road signs I have for sale on eBay:
US Route 56 (http://www.ebay.com/itm/171563828953?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649)
US Route 160 (http://www.ebay.com/itm/171563833764?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649)
US Route 60 (http://www.ebay.com/itm/171563838064?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649)
I bought these signs on eBay myself, several years ago. They've been sitting in my garage ever since. But I'm now in the process of moving and need the extra space as well as the cash. So I figure it's time to pass them on to another worthy collector.
Each of the links has more details about the signs as well as pictures.
I would be happy to combine shipping to save money if you buy more than one. Also, if you happen to live near me (southwest Missouri) and could come pick the signs up from me in the next few days to eliminate shipping altogether, I would be open to that too.
These auctions end tomorrow (Sunday, December 7) between 7:30 and 8:00 PM Central time.
Thanks for reading.
Anyone else got more signs? Preferably like 90s-00s so they wouldn't super fucking expensive
Looking for a company (or someONE... I thought at one point or maybe still... someone on here, actually was making signs for people on request for purchase) to make a DC 295 sign.
Closest I could find was Rice Signs, but of course they have every shield available except DC (its "grayed" out on their site)... and chances of me getting one otherwise is slim to none. I'm thinking they are probably less than 10 in existence on the actual highway anyway... if they even replace them periodically...
Anyway... any idears?

Responding to a three year old post to say that even possession of road signs is a prosecutable offense, at least in Indiana.
I'm looking for signs. Any signs. As well as traffic cones/drums, raised pavement markers, stoplights, BGS's and maybe a part of a crash attenuators. As much as I would like all that, some of it is probably massive, and not something I could convince my mom and dad to get...

Plus one more Hwy 21 junction square in nearly new condition.
Other ones in my collection I'd have to see, so if there's anything else from Ontario of interest let me know and I'll see what I've got or can get.
Edited to update information.

Guess what? My counselor talked to a guy in a sign shop! Right now I'm getting a street sign with my name on it made! :bigass: :bigass: :spin: :spin: :D :D :D
Jake could have done that for you, too ;)

I've been reading through some of the posts on this old thread and I want to revive this thread, for a few reasons.
First off, what's the preferred place for people to buy new signs? I believe I've heard that Jake/Agentsteel has a store. Are there any other stores that people have had experience with, good or bad? Any recommendations or places to avoid? Does anyone know of any actual DOTs that are willing to fabricate signs for the public?
Moving on to used signs, does anyone here have anything they're looking to offload any signs from their collection? As with the original purpose of this thread, this would be a great place to bypass eBay fees (or even PayPal fees, if local) and keep the signs within the community. Either way, I'd be interested in taking a look if anyone is open to selling.
From a personal standpoint, there's a few shields that I'd be interested in, used or new (i.e., in particular, US-151, I-80, a California spade). There are also a few other standard signs that I'd like to add to my collection.

Agentsteel on the forum is generally my go to source for new signs. There was someone on e-bay a while back offering signs a while back, but I don't remember who it was.

I purchase signs from one of New York State DOT's main sign contractors -
Elderlee, Inc. (http://www.elderlee.com/signage/) I recently purchased a 36x36" I-90 sign from Elderlee for $160 (before taxes and shipping). So, in short, there are sign contractors that will happily take your money and make signs to DOT spec or even custom signs.

I work for Jake, so I can get you taken care of if you want to go through him. PM me what you'd like and we can go from there.

I have bought several new signs from National Traffic Signs (https://ntsigns.com/) out of Clearwater, Florida. Had them make an I-515 Nevada for me, an I-11 Nevada for me and a Florida State Road 91 Toll shield. They ran the design of the toll shield by me, allowing me to suggest tweaks (I had them reduce the font size a bit) before making it.
A three digit Interstate shield is $41.46, a 2di Interstate shield is $38.46. Same costs for a U.S. Highway shield (3 digit vs 2 digit). https://ntsigns.com/signs/route-markers-and-parking-lot-signs/
I cut the cost of shipping by driving to their facility and picking up each sign in person. I don't think they charge a terribly high amount for shipping otherwise.
