Have you been on all the interstates in your state?

I dunno, I'm only willing to say "good enough" on detours due to road closure if it's really brief. If the detour is long enough that it means missing an entire segment between two waypoints, I don't think that segment should be considered clinched.

This of course means that any and all detours off of a freeway mean considering something skipped unless it's off and back on at the same interchange.
If you always take the same road, you will never see anything new.

I don't consider a route un-clinched because there's suddenly a new alignment.  My clinching of US-6 includes several alignments that were built in the 50s, and some that haven't been US-6 since the 30s.

In Oregon we have I-5, I-84, I-82 and the 3-digit Interstates (105, 205, 405) and I have been on every single inch of them over the years.  The road I am most happy to have clinched is all of US 101 from Olympia to the 4-level in LA.  It is the greatest drive we have in the West IMO.

Rick
US 101 is THE backbone of the Pacific coast from Bandon OR to Willits CA.  Industry, tourism and local traffic would be gone or severely crippled without it being in functioning condition in BOTH states.

I generally agree with Duke, except for frontage roads. If I have to drive a frontage road, even purposefully a few exits before getting back on, I would consider it clinched. Same reason why I would consider US281 and US77 clinched in Texas when they freewaytize it. I drove the frontage roads that are part of the existing ROW.

If my travels included an old decommissioned routing but not what was signed at that time, I'd not say I clinched it.
OTOH, I'll still say I clinched US30 in Ohio -- `cuz I did. Where it was at the time.
But I don't have all of the present alignment marked on my cmap.
"Officer, I'm always careful to drive the speed limit no matter where I am and that's what I was doin'." Said "No, you weren't," she said, "Yes, I was." He said, "Madam, I just clocked you at 22 MPH," and she said "That's the speed limit," he said "No ma'am, that's the route numbah!"  - Gary Crocker

I'll make an exception for an extension (i.e. the Williams tunnel on I-90 in Boston) but when it's just a re-routing between points A and B then I'll take the old alignment.

drastic re-routing cases to be treated on an individual basis, like US-70 to El Paso vs US-70 to Los Angeles.

I generally agree with Duke, except for frontage roads. If I have to drive a frontage road, even purposefully a few exits before getting back on, I would consider it clinched.

As would I, but with the stipulation that the roads must stay on the same ROW the whole time and the freeway must be visible the whole time. If there is, for example, a soundwall between the freeway and the frontage road, it prevents me from having "seen" that part of the freeway, so I couldn't count it. (though, I don't think I currently have any examples where this matters, personally)

Similarly, if I made a turn onto or off of a road before the very end, but from a point close enough where the end is visible, the clinch is valid.

As for realignments... it really has to be taken case by case. Certainly, if the old alignment is still a numbered highway, I would consider that clinched instead of the new alignment. But if the old alignment is abandoned or removed from the state highway system, then I might be willing to consider the realigned route clinched, so long as it isn't too serious a realignment.
If you always take the same road, you will never see anything new.

The only interstates I have not been on are I-85 and I-95 among major interstates and I-126, I-185, I-526 and I-585 in addition to the aforementioned.

I have clinched I-520 (the Palmetto Parkway) in North Augusta and I-385 in the Upstate.

I have driven the entire length of I-4, I-10, I-75, and I-95, as well as I-195, I-395, I-595, I-295, I-175, and I-375 in Florida. The only one I haven't driven on at all is I-110 in Pensacola...I've only been in the area once, and that was driving through it via I-10 in a rainstorm.

I'd have to think for a while about every other state I've visited, but I don't think I clinched too many of them. I-95 in Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia spring to mind. Been on most of I-75 in Georgia, but likely lots of bits and pieces of interstates in most other states I've been to.

Short answer:  no.

Longer answer:  I haven't been on I-24 or 155.  64, 70, 72, and 74 I've been on only because they multiplex with I-55, although I've been on other parts on 74 in the Quad Cities and Peoria.  I've been on them all in Chicagoland, including the very short I-190.  I've been on the entire length of I-55.  I did take I-39 from Normal to US 6, but it was after dark and became stormy while I was driving.  It was scary when tornado warnings come through on the radio and I have no idea what county I'm in, so I had to wait it out parked in an underpass.

Clinched:   All of CT, RI, MA, VT (re-clinched 95% since April), NH
Close Calls:  ME (everything except I-395 and the last 5 miles of I-95 in Houlton)
Others:  NY:  All of I-84 and I-87, I-90 from Albany to Buffalo, I-95
NJ:  All of the turnpike, I-78, I-80

I have also come close to clinching all of I-95 on the East Coast, with these exceptions:

south of I-595 between Ft Lauderdale and Miami
between I-295 and I-295 in the Richmond-Petersburg area
north of Wilmington DE to Trenton NJ
between US 1 in Houlton and the US/Canada border (some 5 miles or so)

I'm from Delaware...so yes, that's about as easy as it gets (I-95, I-295, I-495). I'll bet I've taken every EXIT in Delaware as well (there aren't that many).

I currently live in Virginia, and I actually have been on almost every interstate in VA as well (I-64, I-264, I-464, I-664, I-66, I-77 although only the multiplexed part with I-81, I-81, I-581, I-95, I-195, I-295, I-395, I-495).

Haven't been on I-381 in Bristol or the non-multiplexed part of I-77.

Indiana:

Clinched: 65, 69 (except for new part), 70, 74, 80, 90, 94, 265, 275, 465, 865

Not clinched: 64

Never been on any part: 164, 469
Indiana: counties 100%, highways 100%
Illinois: counties 100%, highways 61%
Michigan: counties 100%, highways 56%
Wisconsin: counties 86%, highways 23%

In Virginia, I've clinched I-66, I-81, I-85, I-95, I-295, I-395, I-495, I-264 (the part east of I-64 wasn't an Interstate at the time, but I do not feel the need to re-drive it since I've been on the full road that is now I-264), I-664, and I-581.

Driven the portion of I-77 from I-81 south to the state line as well as (obviously from the I-81 clinch) the wrong-way multiplex, but never the part north of I-81.

Driven all of I-64 (including the two multiplexes) except for the portion from Clifton Forge west to the state line.

Never driven on I-381 and doubt I will ever do so. Bristol is a long way from here, I haven't been down that far since 1997, and I don't expect to be down that way in the foreseeable future. Also never driven on I-464, I-564, or I-195. I imagine I'd be more likely to find a reason to drive on I-195 or I-464 than I-564 or I-381.

I've driven every Interstate in the District of Columbia many times, but that's not an accomplishment.

Other states:

All of Delaware's Interstates clinched years ago.

In Maryland I've driven on every Interstate except I-795, but I have yet to clinch I-83 (never used the portion inside I-695), I-97 (never used the portion southeast of the split with MD-3), and I-70 due solely to that tiny stub portion inside I-695.

In New Jersey I've driven on every Interstate except I-287 but have a ways to go in terms of clinching I-80 (also have small segments of I-280 and I-78 that remain undriven).

In Pennsylvania I've travelled (not necessarily driven) on every Interstate except for I-80, I-579, I-86, and I-99. But the only clinches I have are I-76, I-81, I-83, I-95, I-176, and I-276. I-476 would have been a clinch until they extended it up the Northeast Extension. Unlike the I-264 situation in Virginia noted above, I hadn't clinched the southern part of I-476 prior to the redesignation of the Northeast Extension, and I hadn't clinched the Northeast Extension prior to the redesignation either (still haven't), so I wouldn't count it.

Ah! I completely forgot about I-564. Yeah, I doubt I'll be driving on that one anytime soon unless I randomly end up working for the Navy...

If you ever get lost in downtown Richmond/Norfolk, you may just find yourself on I-195 or I-464. If you've taken Amtrak south through Richmond, you get a nice tour of pretty much the entirety of I-195.

Yeah, we've ridden the Auto Train through there a few times (most recently June 18 of this year), but in my mind that doesn't really count even though you can see the road quite clearly (on our most recent trip, we were on the correct side of the train for the southbound carriageway, too, appropriate since we were going south). I have driven on VA-195, just not I-195. I'm kind of surprised I never found an excuse to go that way just for a change of pace when I used to travel the I-95 to I-85 route to and from Duke all the time in my law school years, but I think more often than not I just wanted to get the trip over with and so couldn't be bothered. The big thing now is that since I got married, my wife is a lot less enthusiastic about what she considers to be "pointless" detours, although she did think it was pretty cool to see the sign for the southern end of I-95 last month.

Texas - been on every interstate here.  The only ones I haven't clinched are I-10 (missing the section of the Baytown Freeway between downtown and I-610 in Houston) and I-410 around San Antonio.

I can safely say that my answer is an unfortunate and resounding "NO." Not in New York, and not in Florida either.

What's worse in the case of New York is that even though I've been on most of the Thruway at various points in my life, I've never been the one driving, and this was both before and after I was old enough to drive.

In Florida, I've never been on I-95 south of I-4, and never been on I-75 south of the Lee Roy Selmon Expressway, and never been on I-10 west of the most eastern interchange with US 90 in the Tallahassee area, and even then only on Greyhound buses.

On the other hand, even though I've never been on I-4 from start to finish, I've been on every segment of I-4 since being in Florida. So if this counts as clinching an interstate, I can say I've clinched at least one.

I suppose for a roadgeek, that makes me pretty pathetic compared to the rest of you.

Brandon

As of yesterday, I now have all of I-172 and all of I-70, meaning I have been on all the interstates in Illinois, and only have I-64 left to clinch within Illinois.
