Signals on "close side" of intersection

From my experience, I think that California's (probably starting mid-70s) setups are best (probably bias on my part, having grown up there). Most newer signals have near-right, far-right, & far-left pole-mounted signals. The older ones seem to at least have far-right & far-left pole-mounted signals, and left turn signals (near-and-far) in medians.

Older signals in AZ & NV look very similar to the older signals in CA, but it seems that newer signals in both states might have near-right and far-left signals (especially left-turn signals for far-left), but are foregoing the far-right (with the possible exceptions of Las Vegas & Phoenix proper).

Nevada and California have had similar signal setups for some time. There are a lot of older signals in the Reno area that use the curved mast arms that are prevalent in California.

New signals in Nevada always have the far-right signal for the through movement. The near-right through signal has never been a Nevada standard, and is typically only used at wider intersections or where there are some sight distance issues.

This is as close to the "close" side of the intersection as I've seen around these parts
But there's still another set on the other side. The far set is has 3 lights that are those ones that you can't see unless you're close or at a certain angle (forget what those are called right now) but you can actually see them here haha This is in Burbank, CA. I think it was installed less than a year ago. And of course you're suppose to stop on the side this light is on but people will go through to the other side anyways.
The whole set up is rather unusual for California anyways. Straight arm pole, sideways lights. Not something you see here often.

What is the lag time between the traffic signal on the RR cantilever turning red and the signal at the intersection turning red?

I believe they turn red simultaneously.  The thing is, trucks often have to go very slowly over the tracks, to the point that I wonder if they still end up caught in a red light.  Not only are there a hundred million tracks, but there's a dip between the tracks and Broadway.

Thanks for that haha. Me and my friend always just called it the difficult to see ones. But its better to have an official name

I agree; they are hard to see, even when you're approaching them closely. They are apparently aimed at a very limited area.

Most of them here are for super wide intersections where there's 2 potential sides or two intersections that have lights that are close together, but Ive seen at least one city that uses them seemingly just as regular lights which I dont understand. Monrovia has an abundance of them.

Really? Monrovia? I work in Monrovia and I cannot recall seeing on programmed visibility signal.

The intersection of Huguenot Road (VA 147) and Robious Road (SR 675/711/old VA 44) near Richmond has a railroad crossing in the middle of the intersection, and some of the signals are on the close side to accommodate it.

I don't have a picture of it yet, but the old railroad that used to follow Canoga Avenue in the S.F. Valley has just recently been reborn as a dedicated busway. Anyway, because it's so close to Canoga, the Busway's traffic signals also work in tandem with Canoga's signals, so they are actually positioned before one crosses Canoga. (Although it should be noted an identical set of traffic lights is still traditionally past the intersection.)

The only time the two wouldn't be synchronized is when a bus is coming, the operator has a special transponder.

That's how it is on Chandler Blvd in a couple places because of the busway and also in Burbank also on Chandler but for the bikeway. Although Burbank's are kind of pointless... they have 2 sets of lights that are only about 20 feet from each other give or take.
