Okay, I've been on this road many many times and I always knew that US422 had turned north to head west and that I wasn't on I-480, as this was a connector route of some kind, an extended ramp with an extra exit.

However, I noticed a while ago, the mile markers have 480N inside the blue interstate shield. I know this is the official designation now, but why isn't it signed better, or given a better 3di as it is a much needed connection that to the outside, has no real posted designation.

Actually, ODOT's original idea was to re-route US 422 along the "connector road" to I-480 and Oh 14 to Public Square. Alas, the folks in Shaker Heights, who didn't want I-290 built, didn't want to lose the US 422 designation through their enclave either.
It wasn't till the advent of those 2/10 mile markers that anyone put much thought as to signing that stretch. ODOT was content in overhead signing that road as to I-480 WB and to I-271 NB/US 422 EB.
Considering there's a similiar case to this in Columbus (between Oh 315 and I-670) that has no extra numeral designation. I don't see an extra I-xxx coming to Cleveland.

What I was under the impression of was that US-422 was to be part of a freeway connecting the I-480/SR-14 exit in Garfield Hts and the I-490/East 55th St. Intersection.  Signs along I-271 and I-480 on or near the future alignment all had included the US-422 shield on them, albeit they were green-patched until the freeway was to be built & opened.  The freeway was never built and the patched signs remained until the freeway(s) got their sign upgrades and US-422 was not included anymore.

I don't recall that there was an option to still reroute US-422 along a multiplex with the existing SR-14/Broadway alignment.  It's not like Shaker Heights would have had a numberless road (Chagrin Boulevard) going through their town as SR-8 has been going through Shaker Heights for most of it's life.  (There was a time when ODOT ended SR-8 near the mess of a 6-way intersection that is Chagrin/Northfield/Van-Aken/Warrensville Center Road, but has since re-recognized/re-signed SR-8 all the way to Downtown Cleveland). 

And there is always SR-87 which still follows Shaker Boulevard through the town (kinda like a "safer" US-422 Bypass around part of the bad parts of Shaker Heights and Cleveland's Kinsman neighborhoods).

As a side note, I applied for changes via Google Map Maker to have the road go from "unsigned" to Interstate 480N. Even if its unsigned absent the mile markers, it should be at least made known on Google. If anyone can approve of those edits...

If memory serves me right:

Eastbound On-Ramp:  US-422 EAST I-271 NORTH -- Warren (OH) / Erie PA (or vice-versa)
Westbound On-Ramp:  I-480 WEST -- Cleveland / Toledo
