Any other DMV workers out there?

I recently started with the California DMV in the San Diego area, mostly doing DL work, so far. Anyone else out there work for the DMV in their state or here in California?

Can you explain what DL work is?

I looked up "DMV" and it pulled up Drivers License Department, so I guess it's someone who works there.  :D

Also, a note on the occupation. Obviously I don't work there since I'm 15, but I'd be interested if you'd tell us (or anyone else who might work in the field) what the occupation is like. If you work with people taking a driving test, how well do many people do?  :)

I admit that I was not paying enough attention to what sdmichael was saying.  Somehow I thought that he said he was working for a transportation department (CalTrans), not a motor vehicle dept (DMV).  Oops.  But anyway I would still be interested in more detailed description of DL work (if he is willing)

DL = Driver Licensing. I process the paperwork for the licenses, but not the driving test (knowledge or written tests only). Another person, an "LRE" or "License Registration Examiner" handles drive (skills) tests. How well do people do on the test? I don't have an answer for that, yet. I do know a lot more about what are "automatic fails" than I did before. Those would be things that would cause a test to be a fail regardless of how well the rest went. Example - improper merge into a bike lane, as in turning across the bike lane instead of merging into it first, yielding to any bicyclists in the lane.

DMV is really a lot of fun to work for. You get an insight into how State gov't works as well as what it takes to get various licenses. I hope to handle vehicle registration work eventually, having done it before with ACSC a few years ago. My work, starting on January 2, will be mostly AB 60 work (DL's for "undocumented" immigrants"). Should be busy and interesting. The paperwork is a bit different than an average DL.

Neither Patty nor Selma work at my office. For that matter, no office that I've been in has been that busy. As to Hans Moleman... I know I've seen him there. At some point very soon, I'll probably give him a vision test (or the OPTEC 1000 test AKA "The Machine").

I work for DMV in North Carolina. My job revolves around vehicle inspections, specifically, dealing with drivers whose cars don't pass inspection (which means they can't renew their registration).

For those of you who work at DMVs, are the rest of your employees miserable? I find that going to one here in Maryland means I always have to deal with grumpy employees.

I bet they're a happy bunch.

Most of them are at least civil. Some are even downright pleasant. But there are a few who resent the whole concept and wish it would all just all go away.

I haven't found any that are miserable. Most seem to enjoy their jobs, at least at my office. We also apparently rank fairly high in customer service, which is a good thing.
