Google Street View: Limited coverage of Camden, NJ

I noticed that Google Street View has limited coverage of Camden, New Jersey.  The main roads and the Camden Waterfront area are covered, but the side streets are not.  Camden is notorious for being one of the most dangerous cities in the United States.  I wouldn't be surprised if it was because Google Street View was afraid to drive on the side streets or Google told them not to drive on those streets for their own safety.

However, almost all of Philadelphia is on Street View, even areas with high crime rates.

Maybe because it is Camden.  Or they did not want to drive into NJ and then pay to leave the state.  Especially after going to Camden.

The dirt streets south of Tijuana are covered by Street View, so I'm kind of doubting that's the reason.  New Lenox, IL, has limited coverage, but I'm sure it's not due to crime.

Street view coverage depends on getting someone to do the area in question. I'm sure you could find locals who would do it for the money, just need to make sure they can be trusted.

Both Detroit and Flint have near complete coverage...

Same for Chicago's south and west sides.

Last time I checked most of Ocean County NJ was not covered in street view.  Ocean County is suburban/rural and not crime-ridden like Camden.  However where I live now in the far suburbs of Jacksonville is covered really well.

For the six people interested in exploring Camden from the safety of a computer screen, Bing's memory-eating Streetside does have full coverage of Camden:

Unfortunately for the previous poster, the crime-ridden Ocean County has even less coverage than Google; it looks like that once the Bing drivers found out they were in Ocean County, they turned around.

Despite your vain attempts at a sense of humor, I've actually driven through Camden myself, without a computer screen. Multiple times, on all different roads. I'm still here. Ocean County, on the other hand, has tried to kill me more than once... (Last time it was the tick infestation at the state park)

More strange is Streetview don't cover Eastern Quebec areas like Gaspesia, North Shore and part of Eastern Townships east of Sherbrooke. I would had wished then they cover remotely highways like the James Bay Highway and the Trans-Labrador highway.

You know there are more bizzare instances with GSV not covering a specific area, like the Queens- Midtown Tunnel in NYC.  For some reason the google car stops inside the WB tube about part of the way in and does not capture the rest of the journey into Manhattan.   That is more weird as it is one road among many in the area, plus the same google car that captured the first part of the tunnel had to pass through the rest of the facility.  As far as the EB tube goes, its not covered at all.  The google car entered I-495 from the entrance ramp beneath the Pulaski Bridge to cover the LIE eastbound and nothing from Manhattan east is captured, which is more of a reason then the WB stop in the tunnel.

They did something like that when they covered Clarkson too; unless they invented teleportation, they had to have traveled on some road to get there, but they didn't get any imagery outside of Clarkson for the most part.  It's a shame; all the other coverage in St. Lawrence county is at sunset and hard to see anything.

I'm sure there's a reason for that, since it looks like that's also the case for the George Washington Bridge and the Battery Tunnel. I'm not sure what that reason is, though.

Maybe the camera got knocked off the car while in the tunnel?

For all the negative publicity Camden gets, it's like any other city. If you're there for drugs or other illegal activity, you may get hurt. For the 99.999999999999999% that are just driving thru, they will be fine.

http://www.examiner.com/article/fbi-releases-top-25-most-dangerous-cities-america-list-for-2012

These articles mentions that Camden is not in the top ten, so just to point out that maybe it is not as bad as rumors have it out to be.   Although, this topic is about whether Google believes it and not going to Camden to document the streets on images because of basic fear, I am curious to know why everyone, including radio talk show hosts (not the usual Limbaugh, Beck, etc, but normal D.J morning show types) even have stated that Camden is one of the worst?  Even AARP http://www.aarp.org/travel/destinations/info-02-2012/five-most-dangerous-cities.2.html does not list Camden in its top five.

So where is  it being said that Camden is that bad?  I know that it does have its problems and is up there as far as numbers go, but I am curious to know where people here are thinking  (as well as radio DJs and normal everyday gossip )that it is one of the worst around?   Huffington post is pretty reliable and I would think that AARP is also reliable.

The thing you have to keep in mind about street view is that, at least in the US, you have the legal authority to request that your property not be depicted. Many seemingly random short gaps in coverage are no doubt a result of the person whose house it's in front of contacting Google and asking them to take down the imagery.

Photography is prohibited on MTA and PANYNJ crossings in New York, so, similarly, those agencies have requested that their facilities not appear in Street View. Of course, this doesn't explain why some are covered and others are not.
If you always take the same road, you will never see anything new.

ARMOURERERIC

It frustrates me that GSV does not have any images of any of the homes I ever owned back east.
