Kind of like what New Coke did in the 80s? Why the hell did they have to go that route in the first place? (and the same question can apply to Crystal Pepsi, which I never had the first time)

It was different, but I was never really crazy for it. I was working for a c-store at the time and bought the last 6-pack of bottles and the last 6-pack of cans for collector's items. The bottles eventually blew their caps and the cans were eventually corroded by the soda.

At least CP was an option, whereas Coke entirely switched over to New Coke.

Basic marketing. 

Take Jello for example.  Something like 85% of Jello sales are for the basic 8 flavors.  But, Jello makes nearly 100 variants.  Why?  Because every store has only so much space for gelatin.  The more space Jello takes up, the less room other brands can have. 

so the more Coke and Pepsi products there are, the less room for everybody else.

I remember giving Crystal Pepsi a try a couple of times. I couldn't figure out why they called it a "cola" because I thought it didn't taste anything like a cola, either "regular" or diet. Didn't really taste like Sprite or 7-Up, either. I seem to recall it having an odd citrus note.

Sounds like you got the "later" variant of Crystal Pepsi, which was indeed a citrus drink. The only thing it shared with the name and lasted an extremely short time on the market. The original Crystal Pepsi was cola flavored.

I really didn't have a problem with Crystal Pepsi, I just didn't see the point of its existence.

I tried the diet version of Crystal Pepsi, once.  I almost couldn't finish it, it was **so** sweet.  It tasted like there was about 20 times more aspartame in it than in non-crystal Diet Pepsi.

I loved the Crystal Pepsi when it came out when I was in college.  After a while, though, I thought it was stupid and pointless.  I remember getting the last bottle from the convenience store right next to campus.  I had heard they stopped making it and was surprised they still had one there, so I got it.

New Coke was about burning off remaining stocks of sugar-sweetened Coke so they could switch to HFCS without letting people make easy taste comparisons between them, combined with making a product that was even sweeter than Pepsi, which at the time was seeing big market share increases because of the sweetness.
