From my place in Wise County, VA, about 120 miles.  I pick up US 58 Alt all the way out to Cumberland Gap, merge onto 25E to Corbin, KY.

Gotta call foul on this one. I'm not sure where you are in Wise County, but Alt. 58 exits 23 at Big Stone Gap, then turns left downtown. And it ends at Jonesville, where you would have to turn right to hit 58 to go to Cumberland Gap. From Norton, you have to turn twice just to stay on Alt. 58 to Jonesville.
First off, US-58 Alt to US-58 is a seamless, straight movement in Jonesville. The turning movement is US-58 to US-58.

Second, if he lives in Big Stone Gap, then the whole exiting off US-23 isn't a problem.

So I wouldn't call it "foul" .

OK, I had forgotten about the configuration of the intersection in Jonesville.

But the end of US 58 still is a foul. You have to exit right to hit northbound 25E. The straight movement is across the four lanes of 25E and then onto southbound 25E. And it makes a left turn at New Tazewell, so the straight movement is southbound on TN 33. Not sure how far you can go on that route before you have to turn; I drove it once but don't really remember.

I'm on Powell Valley Road..

I skipped over the trumpet interchange part on accident, so you're correct with the movement.

Are the cutouts still standing in Big Stone Gap, along with the circle-in-a-white-box secondary route markers? It's been a long time since I have been there. Last time I was in Wise, all the unusual signage there was gone, but Norton still had plenty of cutouts.

Based on a post I saw on Facebook earlier this week, I fear a lot of the Tazewell cutouts are gone.

My road, MO 740 dead-ends near where I live, but going the other direction I go just about exactly 20 miles on it to MO 124 after 740 turns to Hwy E. If I'm allowed one turn, I can make it all the way to Iowa 2 near West Grove on 63 north.

-Merges do not count, but exit only lanes do. In other words, you cannot change lanes; you must exit the road and follow the movement that does not require a turn.

WTF?  I can't change lanes because that would be considered a turn?  Whereas actually exiting the road wouldn't be considered a turn?
I poorly worded this rule. What I'm trying to say is that this situation doesn't count as a turn. You can stay in this lane for as long as you can go straight. If the lane ends, then you continue onto the next lane. If the lane exits, then you exit off the highway. If the lane changes highways (i.e. the lane becomes a ramp) then you continue onto that highway.

Let me clarify this better: how far can I travel without using a turn signal?

You might want to have that read:  how far can I legally travel without using a turn signal?  Otherwise then you have all the nincompoops who never bother using turn signals being able to travel as far as they want.   :bigass:

I'll have to keep an eye out because I normally bypass that intersection where 58 Alt splits off from Business 23.  Last time I was through there, I *think* they were gone/replaced with more modern ones.  They've redone most of the traffic lights/intersections in town, save the one next to the Courthouse/Post Office and the other one, where Gilley Ave comes down Country Boy Hill/US 23 Business goes to the right at that light.

But, I believe the cutouts are still around in Norton, especially on Park Ave./Business 23.

Going directly straight out of my driveway (my house is at a T-intersection), I get 400m (1300ft) before reaching the other T-intersection of the crescent.

Using rule 1, I can go with two options (depending on the rule interpretation):

1) Following straight through the intersection leaving my neighbourhood, I get 9.9km (6.2mi) until the road makes a right turn at a stop sign near downtown Kitchener.
2) If I make a left at the exit from my neighbourhood, I get 11.9km (7.4mi) ending at a T-intersection in uptown Waterloo.

I live in a housing development, and it drops you onto a main road at a T, so...using the "subdivison" rule (both ends are a T btw) i can make it rather far. i can use US206 since the road that is at the end of the subdivision crosses it,and with just bends in the road it becomes after crossing 206...it becomes the main line of 206 going north. Southampton NJ to the north end of NJ27 at St Georges Ave. No turns between leaving my subdivision and getting to Rahway NJ. At least 80 miles, google is being dumb with it. but the route is quite clear, once on 206...take it until it becomes 27, following natural curves in the road. 35.52 miles on NJ27. and roughly 45 to get there.

P.S. If i REALLY wanted to be a dick i could argue that....i could get to Neponset MA. without a turn by just using the fact that US 130 and US1 merge into each other, as does 130/206, since 206 and 130 swap sides of the road in Bordentown NJ, with staying straight on 206 meaning i'm staying straight on 130. 130 north has a direct entry onto US1, US1 and I-95 meet in New York City, 95 as an interstate goes quite far before it hits a T at I-93. It is a trumpet, so considering that.... i could make it to Glouchester MA without making a turn. Where the yankee division highway ends, as 95 has an exit and i am going to straight line it. ~330 miles

My street is barely 400 feet long, thanks to the cul-de-sac layout. If I'm counting from the nearest major intersection, it's 2 miles west or 3 miles east, since the state highway actually forces you to turn in order to stay on it.

They are gone in Big Stone.  Checked the other day, while riding through downtown.

Forgot to mention that the City of Norton put up a huge retaining wall (or walls?).  They redid the signage over by the DQ, so those old cutouts are gone.

If I turn south I can go 67 miles to US 90 at Iowa, LA.

Going north, I follow US 165, take the though route, or at least the most used exit on the traffic circle in Alexandria. Follow US 165 to Bastrop, then continue straight on LA 2 to its terminus at US 65 in Lake Providence- 181 miles

I can't go particularly far, about 1.1 miles in one direction and 0.4 miles in the other. In both cases, the road ends in a T-intersection.

Without using the neighborhood rule, I can get 2600ft.

If I continue straight at my local DDI, I can go 12.1 miles.

If I "turn" left onto the ramp, I can go 25.5 miles. I say "turn" with quotes, because it's more gentle than a turn and half of the lanes split off that direction.

If I was allowed 3 turns from my driveway I could get to Lake Providence too, but I'm quite a bit closer than you are

One left turn out of my neighborhood gives me 5.6 miles. If I was allowed one more turn (or if the Radar Hill/1416 junction becomes a roundabout, which I think is the current plan), I would have gone right out of the neighborhood, and the distance would increase to 1,144 miles before ending at a turn-only lane from NB 1st onto NB Railroad in Seattle. I didn't keep track of lanes very well, I just assumed that new lanes were always added on the outside.
why are there only like 5 people on this forum from south dakota

I made it from Birmingham (the road that I turn onto to exit my neighborhood goes directly to I-65) to the option lane on I-65 at the South end of the Nashville Downtown "Loop" (I-65/40) and decided to quit following the lane as there were several possibilities from here.

My current residence is kind of boring (I either end up where Powers Ferry ends at Roswell Road in Marietta, or where Powers Ferry makes a left turn after going under I-285), but when I lived in an apartment across the street from Purdue University in West Lafayette directly on what was then US 231, I could take US 231 north until it merged with US 52, then continue on US 52 until it merged with US 41, then take US 41 all the way into Gary on Indianapolis Boulevard, which kind of ends at a wonky intersection dropping me on East 100th Street in Chicago, which takes a jog at South Torrence so I have to stop there.  109 miles and in a different timezone without using any controlled-access highways.

For some reason Google Maps refused to let me use Indianapolis Boulevard between Chicago Street and 144th Street even though it's not one-way the wrong way.  Must be a bug.
