New signage on Long Island Expressway west, plus William Floyd Parkway

I just uploaded a batch of photos of the new signage that was recently installed on the Long Island Expressway (I-495) westbound.  The photos cover almost the entire length of the expressway where the new signage was installed, except for the easternmost few exits.  I'll hopefully get the eastbound side at some point in the future.  I also added a page for the William Floyd Parkway (Suffolk CR 46), which from what I gather hasn't been photographed all that much yet.  It's all available at http://www.greaternyroads.info.  Enjoy!

I live off of William Floyd and travel the LIE every day. They put up the new signage from West to East; but only replaced the overhead/main signage. Any signage planted on the ground on the side of the roadway was not replaced, for the most part. I am a big fan of the new signage, I like the darker green color and I like the separate, rounded exit tab (similar to Florida style). Interestingly, I was in the Albany area last weekend and I noticed that, while the new signage looks like it does down here, the exit tabs are still classic NY-style, which means it's just my NYSDOT region doing the exit tabs this way. Either way, thanks for the update.

Good caption as you clinched the whole LIE from end to end.
Every day is a winding road, you just got to get used to it.

Well, almost.  The photos of exits 70 and 69 are still the old ones, but hopefully I'll get an opportunity to snap them again.

I like the new signs, too.  From what I gather, the reason for them is that they're more reflective and therefore don't require lighting.  Therefore, they're better for the environment and save money for the state.  I also really like the way they have the HOV lane exit sign for exit 40 when going east that reads "TO NY 25 - EXIT 40" instead of just "TO EXIT 40."  It would be great if they could do that for all the HOV lane exits.  (It would also be great if Nassau could get signed county route numbers so that there would be a shield to put up.)

Some of those signs were only installed in 2005 when the HOV lane was opened between Exits 40 and 32.

I suppose the rational for replacement is based upon the project to remove overhead sign lighting.

Right, all the signs in that area were replaced when they finished the HOV lane.  I remember when it finally opened after having been under construction since back in 1998!  It didn't make sense to me why they were replacing them until someone pointed out the difference with respect to the lighting, and now it all makes sense.  I wonder where else they have on their TODO list.

On the NYSDOT's website it states that signs are being replaced specifically because of the new reflective sheeting. I was surprised because I've never seen such a widespread project (where they replaced the entire LIE). Interestingly, the only road the DOT hasn't yet touched is NY Route 27 (Sunrise Highway)- none of these signs are the new style yet as of August 2013. However, the state parkways have largely been affected as well (Northern, Southern, Wantagh, etc). It's just interesting when it's a road I travel every day, because I get to see how the project plays out and how quickly it gets done. At the same time, they're also "diamond grinding" the concrete pavement on the LIE (495) between exits 64 and 66- this pavement is original and likely hasn't been maintained much since the 1970s when it was built. So- lots of changes happening at one time, lol.

Do you have the link to the page on the NYSDOT site?  Also, any idea whether they're planning to do the FDR Drive in Manhattan any time soon?  Most of the signs on there are pretty old.

Hi David,

You can find a list of the NYSDOT's projects at this link: https://www.dot.ny.gov/projects

It brings up an interactive map of the state. You can click by region or select from dropdown boxes. What I like is that you can also select project by what's under construction or what's in future development- or even what's already been completed. Give it a shot!!

Yes, I'm aware of the search feature that you mention and have used it before.  I just didn't see the specific project that was being discussed in there.

NYSDOT should post the same kinds of signs along Nicoll's Road (Suffolk CR 97), and not just at the LIE interchange.

Agreed, although they probably won't because it's a county route, not a state route.
