I-99 is fascinating in the sense that it has the most bizarre set of concrete pavement on any highway that I have ever traveled. Some of the weirdest sounds of grooved concrete come from the section between it's beginning at I-80 until it meets US 322 in State College. I made a collage of all the different grooving patterns that are responsible for creating the different sounds, and they are numbered in order of when they are heard. https://apis.mail.yahoo.com/ws/v3/mailboxes/@.id==VjN-jOzrHm5d7tJON-_PV57Xyaqg15U9OmfADTYq2MZQEvKucydnZfB3uYaikTzZnFgvpXSQPIt7834jXjyRXCwNNg/messages/@.id==AGKCdxN2F1HxXh_ojwXj0AHVBJg/content/parts/@.id==2/thumbnail?appId=YMailNorrin

I'm getting an error message.

I drove I-99 north of Bald Eagle for the first time in 2014.  I had just gotten my current car (2012 Focus), and briefly thought that one of my tires was going flat after hearing the deck noise.

IKR? the concrete sounds are much MUCH different on I-99 than they are on other highways (pretty loud too) so I see where you are coming from. I've never heard so many different ones on one highway alone.

Back in June 1974 I had a 1967 Imperial with bias ply tires that were common then.  Going along I-5 north of Dunsmir, there was so much racket from the concrete expansion joints that I pulled off in that town to check my tires.  They were fine.

Flash forward to June 1996: My wife (newly wed) and I were moving to Louisiana.  A mile west of Cheyenne WY on I-80, a whole lot of noise came along, making me think a tire had a problem.  Getting out of the 1983 Dodge 400 I had, a quick look at the tires showed they were fine.  I get going.  BAM!  BAM!  BAM!  With the exit so close I kept going and got off the freeway without incident.  This time I looked under the rear of the car to see what was going on.  A piece of tire had broken partly loose and was slamming into its fender well as I drove.  A stop at a tire shop took care of that.

Color me "tired"...

You have to upload it to another site and then put the URL between the img tags.  The forum doesn't host them directly.

As for your original link, the error was probably due to it linking to your email account.

Thank you so much for the heads up! I'm not on here  often so I am not familiar with all of the technical aspects of the forum.

OK Now I got the hang of it! So, this is the collage I made of all the different types of grooving patterns along I-99 running from about I-80 until US 322 in State College. It is very interesting to say the least, and it produces some of the most bizarre concrete sounds I have ever heard along a major interstate. Sounds vary from the buzzing you would hear in states like Indiana (#3) and the louder whining noise you would hear elsewhere like New York or Delaware (#11). Many of the others on here are rather different. I wonder what PennDOT was thinking when constructing this highway???

PennDot does experiment with roads, i could see them using 99 to test out paving types.

The sound grooving pattern 11 makes will always be my favorite. Living in NY i'm so used to it. Surprised me when I went into this area a few years ago to see PennDOT utilizes it too!

That's not the URL of an image.  You have to post the URL of an image in between the [im.g] [/im.g] tags.  You'll know you have a legitimate URL if (1) nothing but the image shows up on the webpage you're copying from and (2) the URL ends in .jpg or .png or something like that.

There is a section of I-275 in Campbell County, Kentucky like that too, even with today's tires.

When you go to that page, you can click on the "Share" arrow.  Then choose "Embed".  That gives you the following:

<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/186524062@N04/49400564338/in/dateposted-public/" title="I-99"><img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49400564338_6edb4be753_k.jpg" width="2048" height="772" alt="I-99"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

Within that, you can pick out the actual image URL, which ends in ".jpg" as expected.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49400564338_6edb4be753_k.jpg

Use that to embed the photo on this site, as shown below.

Thanks dor the advice kphoger. I am very new to doing stuff like this so that is very helpful. As for your reply TheGrassGuy, I did not make a video. I just used pictures from Google Maps. However, someone managed to get a fantastic video of I-99 in that section with all of the different noises.

InterstateGuy

It's crazy how many sounds are in this roughly 15 mile stretch of interstate. My favorite is the New york sound which you can hear at 8:07 in the video.

TheGrassGuy

I haven't driven a mile of I-99, so I can't really know till I've driven it myself, but the newer section of I-287 from exits 47 to 66 in NJ has a unique buzzing noise to it. Sort of like the overpass screech, but quite more mysterious and different. And I am aware that DE-1 has had a similar timbre from about exits 156 to 114. Creeped me out as a child.

Interesting! Did they just do that section of I-287? Because I am positive it use to be like a low pitch whistle. DE-1 has a really high pitched whistle going down that way, is that the sound you are talking about? It starts at around 16:40 in this video.

InterstateGuy

There used to be a bridge on I-80 in PA that was really bizarre. Between I-180 and US Route 15. You first get on and it would make this really eerie lower pitched buzzing sound with a slight whistle. Halfway over, it changes to the New York screaming sound. It was pretty cool now its just boring asphalt. It wasn't even in bad shape.

TheGrassGuy

Does every state use pavement that makes some sort of whistling sound on overpasses? NJ clearly does.
